Amorim begins Sporting farewell tour with 5-1 thumping of Estrela

RUBEN AMORIM is heading to Old Trafford - and now Manchester United should sign Viktor Gyokeres. On the night Amorim started his three-game farewell tour at Sporting, former Coventry striker Gyokeres maintained his stunning record at the club with a hat-trick in the first 42 minutes before grabbing the fourth in the second half. The red-hot forward, a £20million bargain from the Championship, has now scored 20 goals in 16 games this season on top of his 43 strikes in 50 matches last term. How United, the third lowest scorers in the Premier League, would love someone like the Swedish international. Gyokeres’ opener was well placed from an acute angle while the next two - the third being a penalty - were just raw power. His fourth in the 70th minute was a brilliant individual effort oozing with self confidence. That was before Maximiliano Araujo made it five for the hosts minutes before full-time. Yet United fans will hope their team do not defend under Amorim like the moment Sporting allowed Rodrigo Pinho to pull one back for 2-1 with an easy header. As you would expect, the announcement of Amorim’s departure has been mixed here. Outside the stadium, there was a banner which read: “Amorim, this is not your home anymore, thank you.” Other fans, though, took flags into the ground declaring their love for the coach who led the club to two titles. When Amorim’s name was first read out 30 minutes before kick-off, there were whistles and jeers followed by applause. But when the 39-year-old came out of the tunnel for the game, he received a standing ovation and applauded the fans. Gyokeres said about Amorim and reports suggesting he could follow him to Manchester: "We're sad to see him go. He did an extraordinary job here. We all wish him the best. "Follow him to Manchester? I don't know, I'm here and I like it here. I don't think about it." Speaking after the game, Amorim ruled out a move for Gyokeres, or any Sporting player in January. And the incoming Red Devils chief even put his own very lofty price-tag on the Swedish striker. Amorim said: "Gyokeres costs 100 million (£84m) and it's very difficult. "I'm not going to get any players from Sporting in January." Another player who enjoyed a good reception from the home supporters was former United winger Nani. He started his career at Sporting and the 37-year-old came on as a second half sub for Estrela.
PL hits and misses: Liverpool take advantage as Arsenal and Man City stumble
<h3>Toothless Arsenal crying out for Odegaard return</h3>Mikel Arteta said before the game that his Arsenal team thrive when they "show their teeth". Instead, this was a toothless display on the road. Toothless Arsenal crying out for Odegaard return Mikel Arteta said before the game that his Arsenal team thrive when they "show their teeth". Instead, this was a toothless display on the road. One shot on target, none from open play and Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was not required to make a save all game. Arsenal's attack went completely missing. The Gunners created 1.11 expected goals, so should have found the net at St James' Park. But the vast majority of the total came from Mikel Merino's blocked shot and Declan Rice's late miss. For long periods of the game, Arsenal failed to break down Newcastle's mid-block and they were missing something. It appears that if Arsenal have any ambitions to win the Premier League title, or even challenge for it, then Martin Odegaard needs to return from injury quickly. Even after missing the last six weeks of the season, the Arsenal captain has more chances created from open play than any top-flight player. Odegaard would have provided that killer touch Arsenal missed at Newcastle. He may return in midweek for Inter Milan, but has his reintroduction to the side come too late?Sam Blitz Another off-day for misfiring Haaland Do not adjust your screens: Erling Haaland is officially the most wasteful Premier League striker right now. It seems wild to be saying that about a striker who has scored 14 goals in 14 games in all competitions so far this season, but the stats do not lie. Following Man City's shock defeat to Bournemouth, the Norwegian striker has now missed six big chances in five matches since September 28. He has just one goal in that period. Haaland is the most under-performing Premier League player in terms of Expected Goals since that date - by quite some distance. Team-mate Bernardo Silva is third on that list. He had the chance to score a leveller as City applied intense pressure deep into stoppage time, but his header was saved by Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers. To add insult to injury, he put his rebound onto the post from point-blank range. The first effort had an xG of 0.21, the second one had an xG of 0.35. It was an off-day all round and a reminder that Haaland is, in fact, human. But City could do with him returning to his robotic best sharpish.Dan Long Pumped-up Newcastle bruise flat Arsenal again Twice in the second half, Newcastle players celebrated successful defensive actions as if they had scored a goal. Bruno Guimaraes winning a throw-in - cue exuberant fist pumps. Joelinton outmuscling Gabriel at the far post - bring on the roar in front of thousands of baying home fans. This was the kind of Newcastle performance that has made Eddie Howe's side such a tough nut to crack during most of his time in charge - and also served to remind us what they had been missing during a five-game winless run. The Magpies had been too easy to run through, too easy to score against and too easy to overpower for much of this campaign. But this all changed against Arsenal, who have now suffered defeat - and failed to score - on three of their last four visits to St James' Park. Newcastle seem to relish taking on Arteta's side, embracing the opportunity to frustrate, battle and bruise their title-chasing opponents. Maintain this level, and Howe's outfit will be back in the mix for the top four.Joe Shread Semenyo shows why he has top six suitors On Saturday morning, we reported Liverpool were scouting Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, with the Ghana international seen as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, should he leave Anfield when his contract ends at the end of the season. Many will have already been aware of what the forward is capable of producing on a regular basis, but against Man City, he put himself in the spotlight. Semenyo was a constant thorn in City's side, both defensively - he won eight of his nine ground duels and 100 per cent of his tackles - and in an attacking sense, with one goal from four shots, three chances created and numerous bursts forward on the counter. Semenyo - who was playing for Bath in the National League South in 2017/18 - has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water over the past two seasons and, at 24, still has plenty of room to improve. Whether that is at Bournemouth remains to be seen.Dan Long Alexander-Arnold becoming the full package The speed at which Arne Slot has got to work at Liverpool has been impressive - none more so than his work with Trent Alexander-Arnold. His defensive work, often criticised in the past, has been one of the standout aspects of Liverpool's amazing start to the season. While he remains a creative force, his role has changed under Slot. Ryan Gravenberch's introduction in midfield has allowed the Liverpool boss to use Alexander-Arnold more like a conventional full-back and he's answering the call. One of the toughest tests a full-back can undertake in the Premier League is a game against Karou Mitoma but Alexander-Arnold stood strong throughout. His tackle count of nine was the most made by a player in any game this season in the Premier League while Mitoma only completed three of his eight dribbles in the game.Lewis Jones Forest for top four - why not? It is all going right for Forest, currently. Chris Wood has transformed himself into one of the most lethal strikers in the top flight of English football and the team have ascended into the top three of the Premier League. The sky is the limit for this side. They have heaps of quality surrounding their in-form striker and showed that through Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ola Aina and the talent they called upon from the bench. You would be naive to think this was just a purple patch of form - we've seen that sides like Aston Villa can challenge top teams for Champions League football, so why can't Forest be the latest to do this? They have all the necessary components at the ready and continue to churn out performances and results against solid opponents. The upcoming meetings against Newcastle and Arsenal will be crucial in determining what the ceiling for this team really is.Patrick Rowe West Ham must improve across all areas It was a third formation change of the season from Julen Lopetegui, as he returned to the 3-4-3 he used during the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. In the early stages of the game, it looked as if the combination of Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos could keep the in-form Wood quiet after he was limited to just eight touches in the first 25 minutes. However, the Forest forward nodded in the opener moments later and it was not long before West Ham were reduced to 10 players and the game spiralled out of their control. Lopetegui was quick to point out after the game that the result did not solely fall on the shoulders of Alvarez and instead looked at his team as a collective by insisting they must be better across all fronts. And he was right. West Ham started well but unravelled even before the red card. If they are to prevent this season from petering out into mid-table mediocrity - or something much worse - they have to improve across all areas. At the moment, they seem like a team lacking direction.Patrick Rowe Needless Phillips red costs Ipswich dearly as long wait for top-flight win continues It would have been a long 20 minutes in the Portman Road dressing room for Ipswich Town's on-loan midfielder Kalvin Phillips after his sending-off helped turn the match on its head against Leicester City. Until that point, Kieran McKenna's side were in complete control and cruising to a first league win since their promotion back to the Premier League, but for the second week in a row a lack of discipline cost them dear. Last week, it was Harry Clarke's dismissal that acted as spur for Brentford to go on and win a seven-goal thriller with a 96th-minute strike at the Gtech to break Ipswich hearts. Fast forward a week and this time it was the far more experienced Phillips who let his team down, forcing them to paly out the final 20-odd minutes a player short in Suffolk and, boy, did the Foxes take advantage. The visitors should already have been level, but for a sensational goal-line clearance from Cameron Burgess to deny that man Ayew with two minutes to go, although the substitute was not to be denied, levelling matters in the fourth minute of stoppage-time as the Tractor Boys' wait for a top-flight win, which stretches back to April 2002, continues.Richard Morgan Saints win papers over cracks Southampton claimed their first league victory and clean sheet in 10 attempts, but they will struggle to earn many more with similar performances. The hosts controlled possession, as usual, yet were second-best to Everton in all the attacking stats apart from final third entries. Instead, the big Beto moments went Southampton's way. Jan Bednarek's foul on the striker, who then missed from five yards and had a late equaliser ruled out followed instinctive saves by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale - Southampton's Player of the Match. Russell Martin praised his side for "sticking with what we want to be and who we want to be" although their struggle is likely to continue.David Richardson

UEFA consider legal action on rumors about Ceferin’s Vinicius Ballon d’Or remark
UEFA have confirmed the potential for legal action against individuals involved in false quotes attributed to president Aleksander Ceferin. The update relates to the fall out following the Ballon d’Or after Vinicius Junior controversially missed out on the award. UEFA have confirmed the potential for legal action against individuals involved in false quotes attributed to president Aleksander Ceferin. The update relates to the fall out following the Ballon d’Or after Vinicius Junior controversially missed out on the award. Alongside the shock in the Spanish capital over the call from France Football, Los Blancos opted for a full boycott of the ceremony in Paris, despite widespread criticism of their actions. As the debate rolls on, rumours on social media grew, with claims of Ceferin stating the decision was justified, as he joins the critics of Vinicius Jr and Real Madrid. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/33/A0/720x-/-/-/CgAGVmMFMniAWRSgAACGDyJKmbw351.jpg However, no firm source was connected to the quotes, which Ceferin has reportedly denied came from him or UEFA. Europe’s governing body have now issued a statement on the matter as they look to clear the air and move on from controversy surrounding their 57-year-old chief. “We categorically deny claims circulating about UEFA’s alleged comments on the Ballon d’Or. Neither UEFA nor its president made any statements on the result or the selection for the award”, it read. “Such reports are totally unfounded and do not reflect reality.”
Keown blasts Arsenal 'didn't play like champions' after Newcastle defeat

Martin Keown was not impressed with Arsenal after his former club lost 1-0 at Newcastle United on Saturday. Arsenal dominated possession at St James' Park with 64 per cent but Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game in the 12th minute when he headed home following a cross from Anthony Gordon. The result leaves Arsenal without a win in their last three Premier League games. The Gunners now have 18 points from their first 10 games this season. Meanwhile, leaders Manchester City had 23 from nine going into their match away at Bournemouth later in the day - before being stunned by the Cherries in a 2-1 loss. Former defender Keown - who played 449 times for the Gunners during two spells in the 1980s, 90s and 00s - watched Saturday's early game in his role as a TNT Sports pundit. Reacting to the game, Keown said: 'Well, obviously, it's still early in the season, but it's a long way back now with the lead that Man City have… and Liverpool. 'It's thoroughly disappointing. Arsenal just didn't impose their personality on this game at all. Credit to Newcastle. They sat in with a four and a five and one up top, and Arsenal just didn't show enough today. They didn't get going at any point. They've really only got themselves to blame for that.' Keown later added: 'Arsenal just didn't turn up today, didn't play the football we expected, didn't play like champions.' Former Chelsea and Liverpool winger Joe Cole was also working for TNT Sports on Saturday. Cole had chosen Arsenal as his pick to win the title earlier in the season, but he was having second thoughts after seeing them drop more points on Tyneside. 'There's a lot of people tipped them for the league, me included, but I'm second guessing that now after what I saw today,' said Cole. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0D/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcmeCKAfMzOAAB53jHIiQU884.jpg 'When they go back into that dressing room, the manager's got to lift them. The players have got to take ownership of it as well 'Because they've got a hell of a week coming up... going to Milan in the Champions League, then a difficult game against Chelsea, who are on form... and it's a London derby. I think they could soon find themselves 10 points adrift.'

Robin Le Normand has taken a step closer to recovery from injury in Atletico Madrid training this week. The Spain international has not featured since a clash of heads with Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni in the final seconds of Los Rojiblancos’ 1-1 derby draw last month. Following the aftermath of the game, Le Normand was sent for urgent tests, which confirmed a brain injury and a subdural hematoma. The club have understandably opted for extreme caution over the situation, due to the severity of the injury, and he was not called up for Spain duty in October. Despite confidence over him being able to return to match action at the start of November, Diego Simeone has confirmed he remains unclear on comeback date, with tentative steps taken. As per the latest update from Mundo Deportivo, Le Normand has now taken a limited part in training, but the real test will come as he moves into contact sessions in the coming weeks. No risk will be taken over his return with the potential of an absence stretching into 2025.
Rylee Foster: Former Liverpool ace reflects on her journey to the WSL
"If you die and come back to life, you can overcome anything."Three years on from a car crash that left Foster and many others questioning whether she would walk again, the Canada-born shot-stopper is back playing at the highest level and is enjoying every second of it. "If you die and come back to life, you can overcome anything." Three years on from a car crash that left Foster and many others questioning whether she would walk again, the Canada-born shot-stopper is back playing at the highest level and is enjoying every second of it. The list of injuries suffered while holidaying in Finland back in 2021 was extensive. Neck fractures, lower-back breaks, a broken cheekbone, partial tears in the knee and shoulder, as well as brain damage. As expected, a lengthy rehabilitation phase followed with the main objective being to obtain a decent quality of life for the then 23-year-old. But she had other ideas. Speaking exclusively toSky Sports, Foster reflected on her journey back to the professional game after signing a short-term deal with Everton this summer. She said: "I am happy playing now. When you are out of the game, it is hard to find your identity again. The accident gave me opportunity but took away my biggest passion. You lose that love for the game, "For me to be back in the WSL, amongst the best of the best, I feel that love and desire. I'm being challenged and tested every day which is what I want. "That challenge is what I was craving. I have that here. Back in a league where anything can happen." 731 days after suffering life-threatening injuries, Foster was back between the sticks for A-League side Wellington Phoenix after being released by Liverpool at the end of her contract in 2022. "Business is business. I was an asset that could not perform which is the cruel reality of football," Foster said after being asked about her perception of Liverpool now. "At the end of the day, do I have hard feelings? No. I'm back in the city that I call home and my family is from. I have the opportunity to represent a club which is just as established and historical. "It is awesome. We are trying to grow the game; I have respect for both sides. I am honoured to be back playing." After making 19 appearances across all competitions in New Zealand, she set her sights on returning to the United Kingdom with a trial at Celtic. However, the road to finding a new club was not an easy one. After featuring in five pre-season games for Celtic, Foster was not offered a contract at the end of it due to a "misdiagnosed" knee problem. But as usual, this setback did not deter her as she pursued other trial opportunities before eventually signing for Everton. Foster had previously stated clubs had been hesitant to take the "risk" given the injury history, although any worries Everton boss Brian Sorensen had about signing the 26-year-old quickly dispersed after seeing her in action. "She had been out there playing consistently and was in the entire pre-season as a trialist," Sorensen toldSky Sports. "She did well and we saw no concerns in terms of her older accident, we saw her play fresh and looked sharp. "Rylee is a good character and comes with a lot of energy, so she is settling in really well." She is yet to make her debut for the Toffees as she competes with first-choice goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan and fellow understudy Emily Ramsey, but is not piling any pressure on herself and insists her "time will come" in blue. "For me it is about staying ready. We know who steps between the sticks, the job will get done," she added. "My objective is to keep asking questions and working hard. My time will come but I'm here and earning my stripes back. I was away for so long at the top level and can't expect to be playing every day. "It is realistic to say I'm here and taking my opportunities when they come. I'm still young, my time will come and it is not something I need to stress about." Her impressive mentality stems from the accident itself and the new-found freedom it has given her across all aspects of her life. While many players on a short-term deal would look at the lack of game-time as an issue, Foster instead chooses to remain grateful for the opportunity itself after coming so close to losing it all. She said: "One can argue that if you die and come back to life, you can kind of overcome anything. "That is one of the most uncontrollable factors is that most of us can't survive. I am untouchable and that is not an arrogance thing, it's mentality. "What I went through, I don't wish upon anyone, but I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to endure those things. "I will do whatever I can do to be back playing. I know what it is like to be told you won't play again at very young age. "I take my opportunities to make the best of it. Nothing phases me. When you die and come back, you smile because you can." Watch Everton Women vs Chelsea Women live on Sky Sports Football this Sunday from 6.30pm.

Two decades after its last edition was played to make way for the Club World Cup, FIFA have resurrected the Intercontinental Cup to maintain the annual clash between the continental champions of the six confederations, now without a host. Barcelona boss Flick calls for LaLiga suspension after Spanish floods
Barcelona are in high spirits ahead of Sunday's derby against Espanyol, though Hansi Flick does not think LaLiga matches should be played this weekend.Barca thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend to establish a six-point lead in LaLiga but their city rivals Espanyol are 20 points behind and languishing in 17th place, a point above the relegation zone. Barcelona are in high spirits ahead of Sunday's derby against Espanyol, though Hansi Flick does not think LaLiga matches should be played this weekend. Barca thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend to establish a six-point lead in LaLiga but their city rivals Espanyol are 20 points behind and languishing in 17th place, a point above the relegation zone. Yet Flick feels it is wrong that LaLiga is playing on in the wake of the flash floods that have devastated regions of eastern Spain, with Valencia particularly impacted. Madrid's game against Valencia was naturally postponed, but most other fixtures in Spain's top tier are going ahead. "If it were me, I might [suspend LaLiga] because it is an incredible tragedy for Valencia and Spain as a whole," Flick said. "We have spoken with Ferran [Torres] who is from the area, and it is not easy to decide whether the game should be played or not. "It is a tragedy. It was something similar in Germany three years ago, it is horrible. We will do everything we can to help. The rest is for LaLiga to decide." Barca do hold a brilliant record against Espanyol, having not lost in their last 26 encounters with their city rivals. Flick, though, warned his side against any complacency. "I know what a Barca-Espanyol derby means. It will be a tough match, for sure. After a fantastic week, it is important to be at 100% tomorrow, with intensity and maximum quality," Flick said. "We always prepare well for the next game. After the celebrations, we focus on the next game. We work on what we want tomorrow. It's a very long game in the league and we focus on the next game." Barca have taken 30 points from their first 11 league matches this season, their second-highest tally at this stage of a campaign in the competition, after 31 points in the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2017-18 seasons.
‘OM has a place in my heart’ – Wesley Fofana on Marseille’s summer approach
Wesley Fofana (23) has revealed in an exclusive interview with Téléfoot that he was approached by Olympique de Marseille’s sporting advisor Medhi Benatia over the summer. There was some uncertainty about Fofana’s future at Chelsea as the club was beginning a new project with the departure of Mauricio Pochettino and the arrival of his successor Enzo Maresca. The centre-back had missed the entire 2023/24 campaign and there was no guarantee that Maresca would want to rely upon him. With that in mind, Marseille looked to test the waters for a defender who had been born in the city but had never made an appearance for the club. And Fofana reveals there was definitely a certain attraction to returning home to his city, as he states “We got a call from Mr. Benatia. And my heart went: boom boom.” However, a conversation with Maresca would put an end to Marseille’s pursuit of the defender. Fofana explains to the French broadcaster, “I didn’t know if I was going to be part of Chelsea’s project. But I had a talk with the coach. He told me he was counting on me this year. So I said, I was very happy and I was 100% with Chelsea.” Still, Fofana does not close the door fully on an eventual homecoming once his time at Chelsea has come to an end as he notes, “It’s true that Marseille has a place in my heart, [so] we’ll see.” GFFN | Nick Hartland
14 jaw-dropping transfers unbelievable nearly happened: Maradona to Sheff Utd…
Former Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid stars are among the players who came close to completing bizarre moves to the likes of Leeds United, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers. The likes of Pep Guardiola, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff have all been involved in some of the best ‘nearly-transfers’ you could imagine. Every club has a story like these, and it was impossible to include them all, but Blackburn Rovers really do seem to have more than most. Ahead of Manchester City’s FA Cup clash with Wigan Athletic in February 2018, Guardiola admitted that he almost joined the Latics upon their promotion to the Premier League in 2005, but he was deemed not good enough to compete for a place in midfield with Jimmy Bullard and Graham Kavanagh. “I was not good enough, that is the truth,” Guardiola said. “I was old, really old! “I knocked on the door, I tried to come here to play in English football, but I was not able. “The same happened here at Manchester City, when I came here with Stuart Pearce. They were so clever! I was not good enough.” Blackburn Rovers have a pretty good history when it comes to ridiculous transfer rumours, but let’s start with Ronaldinho. Venky’s made the former World Player of the Year an offer of £20million over three years to move to Lancashire from AC Milan. “He is keen to play in the EPL and I think that goes in our favour,” Venky’s chair Anuradha Desai told BBC Radio Lancashire. Desai also confirmed Blackburn were hopeful of signing David Beckham and Damien Duff (again). We don’t need to tell you whether any of these players moved to Ewood Park. While managing Cardiff City, Neil Warnock revealed he was convinced not to sign Van Dijk at Crystal Palace after his chief scout insisted the defender was too slow. “I think he’s still in a job as well,” Warnock said of the scout. Maradona had a remarkable flirtation with Yorkshire on two occasions throughout his career. After a scouting trip to Argentina in 1978, Sheffield United manager Harry Haslam urged the Second Division club to sign a 17-year-old Maradona in a £200,000 deal – only for the Blades to opt for Alex Sabella in a £160,000 transfer and suffer relegation to the third tier. Nine years later, Leeds United managing director Bill Fotherby held talks with an agent of Maradona to see whether the Argentina star could be persuaded to join the Whites, who were also in the Second Division at the time. It might have been a bit of a PR move with Fotherby never seriously intending to sign Maradona, but it clearly worked a treat. Bolton’s squad in 2004 contained the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha, Fernando Hierro and Ivan Campo, and at one stage it appeared Rivaldo was about to join Sam Allardyce’s ranks. “With a transfer of this size you can never be 100% sure, but Sam’s made his offer and things are going very well,” Peter Harrison, a representative of the Brazilian, told the Bolton Evening News. “There’s nothing untoward about the delay. Rivaldo just wanted time to think about it. “I know for sure that Sam made a good impression on him and so did Phil Gartside. Everything’s looking good.” Rivaldo, who was a free agent after leaving Cruzeiro, even said: “I want the challenge of trying to get Bolton into Europe for the first time in their history. It is an exciting time.” Alas, just a couple of weeks later, Allardyce told the club’s official website: “I can categorically confirm that Rivaldo will not be joining us.” We really enjoyed the volcanic ash cloud over Iceland in 2010 which disrupted a host of flights around Europe. Yer da went mental, and it was really quite funny. Blackburn fans, meanwhile, continue to rue the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, as it scuppered their chance of signing a 21-year-old Robert Lewandowski from Lech Poznan in a £4million. “Why do you want to sign Zidane when we’ve got Tim Sherwood?” There are many ways to answer that question, but for former Blackburn chairman Jack Walker there were none. Blackburn had won the Premier League in 1994-95, and Ray Harford and his assistant coach Derek Fazackerley wanted the club to sign a 23-year-old Zidane, who was playing for Bordeaux at the time. We never got to see Carlos, a man whose body composition was made up of 80% thigh, charging up to a dead ball and leathering a free-kick into a wall for an English club, but it so nearly could have been in the West Midlands. “I actually came close to joining Aston Villa early in my career,” Carlos told The Sun. “I met with the club, but nothing happened. Birmingham were also interested, but it didn’t go anywhere and I later joined Inter Milan.” Is there another player you could picture less in the Scottish Premiership than Iniesta? Is there another player you think of less when you hear the words ‘Barry Ferguson’s replacement’? Alex McLeish did indeed try to sign Iniesta for Rangers as a replacement for Ferguson back in 2004. “He was only 18 at the time,” McLeish told the Daily Record. “We asked if we could bring him to Scotland and were told that they would try and make some hay at Barcelona and get him over to us. “They said Iniesta needed to get some action.” It worked out alright for Iniesta in the end, but just imagine the midfielder playing behind Nacho Novo and Dado Prso. Glorious. In 2009, former Burnley chairman Brendan Flood discovered the Clarets could have signed Essien, but they were unwilling to pay the midfielder £60-a-week. “I discovered Michael Essien had been on trial here for a few days,” Flood said. “One of the best players in the World Cup – and we hadn’t signed him. “The club policy meant we wouldn’t pay an apprentice more than 60 quid a week. It smacked me in the face that the problem was a lack of communication within the club that stopped our youth guys making an exception to the rule.” Shevchenko himself denies having ever had a trial at West Ham, but according to Harry Redknapp, the east Londoners rejected the chance to sign the striker. “I was offered [Shevchenko] when he was only 19. We had him over for training for three or four days and I remember watching him play for us in a game against Barnet reserves at Chadwell Heath.” But it is at this point we’re treated with one of the most ‘Arry Redknapp quotes of all time. “He didn’t pull up any trees but looked decent enough. But this was just after I had had all those problems with the Romanian lads and I thought the last thing I needed was a Ukrainian. “Besides, they were asking around £1million for him and I didn’t have the money at the time.” Even Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the wisened uncle of European football, was once young. But a young Zlatan was still Zlatan – in name and temperament. Somehow, crisis club QPR convinced him to go for a trial at Loftus Road in 1998. It didn’t go very well. When one of the coaches put in a meaty tackle on Ibrahimovic, the big Swede told the coach to “fuck off”. And that was the end of that. Oh, what could have been… READ: When a teenage Zlatan failed a trial at QPR… for telling coach to ‘f*ck off’ We’re not saying Sunderland have made some bad decisions in the transfer market over recent years, but they were still paying Jack Rodwell’s wages until 2018, and they also turned down the chance to sign Rakitic for £380,000 in 2011. Despite the recommendation of European director of scouting Ian Atkins, the Black Cats decided not to pay the compensation to sign a 22-year-old Rakitic, who had only six months left on his contract, from Schalke. D’ya know what? We are saying Sunderland have made some bad decisions in the transfer market over recent years. It felt like we were waiting to see Aubameyang in the Premier League for years. It took a club-record £56million offer from Arsenal to eventually make it happen, but West Brom could have achieved it for significantly less back in 2011. Sadly for Albion fans, the club decided he just wasn’t worth it at €2million. “I have to stress, every scout in the land will have a similar story,” said the man who recommended him to the Baggies. Maybe so, but this is a doozy. Cruyff did have a dalliance with Leicester City before joining Levante later in his career, but that’s nothing on the story that Scottish second-tier side Dumbarton tried to sign the Dutch icon, who was 33 at the time. Then-Dumbarton manager Sean Fallon later admitted the club’s attempt was a glorified PR exercise. “I knew it was always unlikely we would get Cruyff, but the way I saw it we couldn’t lose,” he said. “At worst, it got Dumbarton on the back pages for a few days and boosted the club’s image and profile, which was very low at that time. At best, if we were really lucky, we might get a magnificent player.” But the offer did catch Cruyff’s eye. “Was I tempted? Yes, of course,” he said in his later years. “Playing in England, or Britain, was something I had always wanted to do. “But I thought I was too old at that stage to go to Scotland, where you know the weather will be difficult. When you’re old your muscles get stiff, and moving to a cold country is asking for problems.”
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone joins growing discontent against La Liga
In the last 24 hours, a number of notable figures across Spanish football have criticised La Liga’s decision to go ahead with the MD12 fixture schedule, in the wake of the devastating Storm Dana that struck the Valencia community earlier this week. Valencia-Real Madrid and Villarreal-Rayo Vallecano were both postponed, although the other eight matches are on. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick also gave his opinion that football should not be on this weekend, and this sentiment has been echoed by Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone, who expressed his views during his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s match against Las Palmas, as per Diario AS. “It doesn’t make any sense. What is happening is something very hard. It’s great to see the people who went out to the streets to help, who with a shovel and their equipment try to collaborate and that speaks very well of the country, of the people and we want to help wherever we can. There are people having a very bad time, it is very sad and they tell us to continue and here we are, continuing.” There’s certainly been a lot of angst aimed at La Liga over this matter, but for now, nothing has changed. It means that Simeone is still looking to snap Atletico Madrid’s poor recent form on Sunday.
Amorim should SACK Van Nistelrooy in his bid to fix 's***show' at Man United
Troy Deeney has urged Ruben Amorim to brutally sack Ruud van Nistelrooy in order to begin fixing the 's***show' at Manchester United.Amorim was officially announced as the Red Devils' new head coach yesterday but will take charge at Old Trafford on November 11, allowing him to oversee Sporting Lisbon's next two matches. He has signed a contract until June 2027. Troy Deeney has urged Ruben Amorim to brutally sack Ruud van Nistelrooy in order to begin fixing the 's***show' at Manchester United. Amorim was officially announced as the Red Devils' new head coach yesterday but will take charge at Old Trafford on November 11, allowing him to oversee Sporting Lisbon's next two matches. He has signed a contract until June 2027. Van Nistelrooy was temporarily handed the reins by United after Erik ten Hag's dismissal and he will remain in post for the next three fixtures, having already steered his side to a thumping victory against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. It is understood that Amorim will look to bring several of his trusted coaches from Sporting and Van Nistelrooy's long-term future is uncertain as a result. But Deeney believes the 39-year-old must rip up the backroom team and surround himself with his own staff when he arrives during the international break. Writing for The Sun, Deeney said: 'The person who will come out of this the best? Ruud. He will have a nice pay packet. 'His stock will rise and he won't be tarnished with Ten Hag's tenure. 'Even if United lose 7-0 to Chelsea, Ruud can say: "It's not my fault. The players were distracted by Ten Hag going and the new manager." 'My one bit of advice to Ruben? 'Don't keep Ruud on. You want to clear the decks once you are there, with only your people around you. 'Only then can you figure out what the problems are - and how to solve them.' Deeney has also warned Amorim that he will face a stark challenge at United, particularly over the squad's current fitness levels and suitability for his tactics. He added: 'He has a heck of a job. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/05/720x-/-/-/CgAGVmcmGp-ARC1aAACVFEHCTYU003.jpg 'I am not saying these United boys are not fit but they will be nowhere near fit enough for Amorim. His Sporting teams run their arses off. 'There are going to be a lot of ups and downs between now and January 1 and then - oh my God - is he going to have to come out with a broom and sweep the lot. 'If you're walking into that s***show with that ball of yarn to untangle, where do you begin? Good luck with that, Ruben.'
Amorim to Man Utd: Outgoing Sporting boss explains decision to move
Ruben Amorim revealed he asked to delay his Manchester United start time until the end of the season but was told it was "now or never" – as he passionately defended his exit to Sporting fans.Amorim was confirmed as United boss on Friday and will take Sporting's games against Manchester City and Braga next week before taking over at Old Trafford on November 11. Ruben Amorim revealed he asked to delay his Manchester United start time until the end of the season but was told it was "now or never" – as he passionately defended his exit to Sporting fans. Amorim was confirmed as United boss on Friday and will take Sporting's games against Manchester City and Braga next week before taking over at Old Trafford on November 11. The 39-year-old revealed he spent three days deciding his options - and changed his mind several times in the process - before eventually agreeing to move to Man Utd mid-season. Speaking after Sporting's win over Estrela, Amorim said: "At the beginning of the season, I had a talk with [President Frederico Varandas] and Hugo Viana [then-sporting director] and I said that whatever happened, this would be my last season with Sporting. The president is here, he can confirm that. "The season started, we know that we started very well. Then the Manchester United situation came and they appeared. They paid above the release clause. I never discussed anything with the president about this bargaining. The only question I made was only to go at the end of the season. "For three days, I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season. But I was told it was not possible, I was told it was now or never, or Manchester United would go for another option. "I had three days to make my decision. The change is radical in my life but I had three days to make this decision. That's what I did. "I have had other opportunities, the president and Viana can confirm this is not the first or the second time I was asked for by another team. "I wanted that one in Manchester. I want that context. That context allows me to do things my way. It's just like Sporting. There's a time when I have to take a step forward. It was harder for me than for any Sporting fan but I had to do this." Amorim: Another team offered me three times more than Man Utd Amorim continued in a lengthy, impassioned first answer press conference: "I mean, let's not go around the bush. "There was a club that said that if I rejected it now in six months I wouldn't get it, and I knew that in six months I will leave Sporting, so I did not want to regret not making this decision. "I know it was a disappointment to the Sporting fans and not take the risk or wait for the end of the season, and then I wouldn't have the only club I wanted to coach. "The president knows about this because I had other offers and I didn't want them before, but this one I did want so I made my decision. "But now I go home more happier because I have explained. People say 'it's about the money', but there was another team that that wanted to hire me before and they paid three times more than Manchester." Amorim: I will not sign Sporting players in January Amorim insisted Man Utd will not sign Sporting players - including in-demand striker Viktor Gyokeres, who scored four goals against Estrela on Friday - in the January transfer window "Gyokeres costs £100m," said Amorim. "It's very complicated. I will not take any of Sporting's players in January. But that's another story. "There was no revolt whatsoever [from the Sporting players about Amorim's exit]. But they were sad. "The players were anxious. We could feel the atmosphere was a little different. I have been with them for five years, they have been with me for five years. I even talked to them before I signed them. It's part of our characteristics to be close to the players. "They know I'm the coach until Braga [final game], then I'm leaving. But disappointment? Yes." The view from Portugal: how did Sporting fans react to Amorim? Sky Sports News' Gail Davis at the Estadio Jose Alvalade: "Amorim had Gyokeres to thank for more than just the four goals tonight - the striker lifted the atmosphere around the place. "The Sporting fans felt a little better about life as they left the Jose Alvalade Stadium. They had braved the deluge of rain before kick-off to voice their frustrations of feeling betrayed - not so much about Amorim's exit but the timing of it. "Come full-time, Amorim disappeared down the tunnel pretty quickly. He has one final home game - the Champions League encounter against Manchester City - to say his goodbyes. "A finale that brings a glimpse of what's to come and how Amorim might take on the challenge of life as a Premier League head coach." Who is Amorim? A former Benfica and Portugal midfielder, Amorim retired as a player in 2017 and two years later took up his first managerial job at Braga. The Portuguese then joined Sporting in March 2020, establishing himself as one of Europe's most sought-after young coaches, twice guiding the club to the Primeira Liga title. Amorim has also won the Taca da Liga - the Portuguese League Cup - on three occasions, twice with Sporting and once with Braga. Explaining Man Utd's thinking in appointing Amorim Sky Sports News' Melissa Reddy: When Sporting parted with €10m (£8.4m) to recruit a head coach without a UEFA Pro Licence and with only three months of top-flight experience on his CV from Braga in 2020, it was termed "absolute insanity". The scathing reaction from the club's fans and analysts in Portugal are still stored on message boards - the internet, after all, never forgets - and paints a sharp contrast to the sentiment now. Back then, Sporting's hierarchy were ridiculed for sanctioning such a big spend on an unknown quantity. "Another great deal by the board, €10m for unlicensed manager," one sarcastic comment read. This week, as Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag and turned at the speed of light to Amorim, that same figure was a lightning rod for Sporting's decision-makers: how dare they set the fee so low for the biggest clubs in world football to steal their special one? The 39-year-old will be priceless to United if he delivers what they are convinced he has the ability to: a transformation of tactical identity, personality and proper football enjoyment. Ten Hag posts Man Utd farewell Erik ten Haghas released a statement in the wake of his Man Utd sacking, thanking the club's fans and pointing to the two trophies he won at Old Trafford - as well as saying his "dream has come to an end" with his dismissal. Interestingly, although Ten Hag mentions the warmth he received from "everyone at the club" there is no mention of the Man Utd players, staff or hierarchy... In a statement released via his agency, Ten Hag said: "Dear fans, let me start by thanking you. Thank you for always being there for the club. Whether it was a game far away or a tough match at Old Trafford, your support has been unshakeable. The atmosphere at Old Trafford has always been electrifying thanks to you. I felt it many times. "Also in away games, it gave the team and me an incredible feeling to hear the United chants taking over the opponents' stadiums, whether the game was in England, Europe or during the summer tours. "I always enjoyed meeting Manchester United fans throughout the world. Walking the streets and being able to chat with fans in England, Europe, Asia, Australia, the USA - you inspired me and radiated a strong sense of unity. That's what makes United supporters so special. "I want to thank you for giving me this feeling and for your support. I also want to thank the staff in every department of the club for their unwavering support in good times and bad. "We won two trophies - achievements that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Of course, my dream was to bring more trophies to the cabinet. Unfortunately, that dream has come to an end. "I wish all Manchester United fans nothing but success, trophies and glory. Your support and the warmth I received from everyone at the club helped me feel at home. "Thank you for this chapter in my life. Erik."
Arsenal fans’ list of conspiracies including red cards, ‘bizarre’ VAR calls
PLENTY of Arsenal fans are convinced the Premier League and its referees are set out to derail their title ambitions. So much so that they claim there is a whole "laundry list" of conspiracy theories going against them. PLENTY of Arsenal fans are convinced the Premier League and its referees are set out to derail their title ambitions. So much so that they claim there is a whole "laundry list" of conspiracy theories going against them. Of course, while there is an understandable desire for more consistency across the division, the outrageous suggestions have no actual footing or proof. And plenty of controversial VAR decisions over the last year have gone for the Gunners. Many of their fans continue to blast the PGMOL online. Words such as "cheat" and "corrupt" regularly get bandied about whenever their team fail to pick up all three points. And one fan fumed this week: "I don’t give a f*** what anybody tells me, I genuinely believe there is a conspiracy to stop Arsenal from winning the Premier League by Premier League referees. "We just have a laundry list of examples. I can’t be going crazy here. This is ridiculous." Their own manager Mikel Arteta has certainly had his complaints - but even he had to debunk his supporters for their conspiracy theories accusations. But here are some of the most contentious calls which have riled up Arsenal fans the most on social media... NEWCASTLE GOAL STANDS The one that really kick-started the complaints came at St James' Park in November 2023 when Anthony Gordon's winner was allowed to stand. The ball looked as though it might have gone out of play before calls for a foul and an offside. Arteta blasted the calls as "embarrassing" and a "disgrace" - even though Kai Havertz was lucky to escape a red card in the game. Arsenal fan fury escalated a year on when Aston Villa's goal was ruled out when the ball was adjudged to have crossed the byline in the build-up. HAVERTZ HANDBALL Arsenal suffered another 1-0 defeat last December, that time at Aston Villa. The Gunners thought they had scored a last-gasp equaliser but it was chalked off for a Havertz handball. But upon seeing the replays, some Gunners fans were convinced the ball actually hit Matty Cash's hand in a second handball. And their misery was compounded when it was confirmed that if a team-mate put the ball into the net, it may well have stood. RICE RED The big one to trigger the 2024-25 season's complaints came at the end of August when Arsenal hosted Brighton. Already on a yellow card, Declan Rice petulantly flicked a rolling ball away from Joel Veltman, who was lining up a free-kick. Veltman ended up kicking Rice who went down, only to be given his marching orders with a second yellow from Chris Kavanagh for "delaying the restart". Arsenal quite rightly pointed to the lack of consistency as Joao Pedro received no punishment for kicking the ball down the pitch when it had already gone out for a throw. The Gunners were in total control but the red card changed the game and it finished 1-1. TROSSARD SUFFERS SAME FATE And Rice was not the only Arsenal player to be sent off for a second yellow this season after delaying the restart. Just three weeks after the Brighton incident, Leandro Trossard saw red in similar fashion away at Manchester City. Again already on a yellow, the whistle had already gone for a foul when Trossard thumped it clear and Michael Oliver brandished the second yellow. Jeremy Doku escaped a caution because he was knocking the ball back to where a free-kick was given in the same game. Arsenal were quick to point out Oliver refereed some matches in the UAE - and therefore implied he was on the payroll of Manchester City's owners and would then be biased against Arsenal. It finished 2-2 at the Etihad after Arsenal had clung on to their lead until the 98th minute. SALIBA SENT OFF Arsenal picked up their third red card of the season when William Saliba was dismissed at Bournemouth - and they went on to lose 2-0. Rob Jones initially showed Saliba yellow card for pulling back Evanilson just into the Gunners' half - but VAR intervened and decided he had denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. And as a result, it was upgraded to a red card. Just 24 hours later, Arsenal fans kicked off that Chelsea's Tosin Adarabioyo stayed on the field following a similar incident at Anfield. STONES' GOAL STANDS On the day after the defeat at the Vitality, the mood amongst Gunners supporters worsened when Manchester City grabbed an injury-time winner at Wolves. John Stones' header was originally written off for offside - before the VAR decided Bernardo Silva was not interfering with Jose Sa despite being in an offside position. LIVERPOOL PART I Then came the 2-2 draw with Liverpool last weekend. Arsenal were incensed that a late winner was not allowed. Although it was not immediately clear why, Anthony Taylor blew the whistleWAYbefore the ball eventually ended up in the net. Havertz bundled Trent Alexander-Arnold to the ground to get to the loose ball as it came back off the post, anyway, so there was no way the goal would have counted. Still, Arsenal fans reckon the so-called "phantom goal" could come back to haunt them come the end of the season. LIVERPOOL PART II In the same game, the Gunners felt they should have had a penalty for a strong challenge from Ibrahima Konate on Gabriel Martinelli. Replays and the Premier League Match Centre on X both confirmed the Reds defender won the ball. And the Gunners fans seemingly forgot about Martin Odegaard's blatant handball at Anfield last season that went unpunished. LIVERPOOL PART III Lastly, some Arsenal fans even claimed David Raya's yellow card for time wasting was "pre-meditated" by Taylor. One even went back and counted the exact number of seconds Liverpool took over corners to compare to Raya in a desperate attempt to drive home the conspiracy theory agenda.

Arsenal attempted to muster a response against the hosts, but Mikel Arteta's side proved unable to find a leveller. The defeat leaves Arsenal at risk of falling further adrift of reigning champions Man City and Liverpool in the Premier League title race, while victory provided a major boost to Newcastle's season. Mail Sport's Issan Khan rates the players at St James' Park. NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3) NICK POPE: 6.5 Good presence in the box on aerial crosses. A clean-sheet to boot, too. TINO LIVRAMENTO: 6.5 Was not deterred by Gabriel Martinelli’s runs forward and kept resolutely to his task. FABIAN SCHAR: 6.5 Didn’t give the attackers anything to feed off. Made some solid clearances. DAN BURN: 6.5 Did well against Kai Havertz in duels. Played in sync with Schar. LEWIS HALL: 6.5 Coped well at the back under pressure from Arsenal’s quick men. BRUNO GUIMARAES: 6.5 Part of a midfield which exploited a lack of creativity from the opposition. SEAN LONGSTAFF: 7.5 Harried around in the middle, didn’t give an inch. Caused lots of issues for the Arsenal midfield and strong in tackles. JOE WILLOCK: 6.5 Created much pressure with direct runs and helped out defensively, too ANTHONY GORDON: 8.5 A top-class assist for Alexander Isak’s goal. Newcastle’s bright spark going forward, showing much skill. ALEXANDER ISAK: 8 Great header to score Newcastle’s goal. Lively in and around the box all game. Manager - EDDIE HOWE - 6.5 ARSENAL (4-3-3) DAVID RAYA: 6 Made some decent saves and caught well. Isak’s header was unstoppable. THOMAS PARTEY: 5.5 Newcastle’s right flank kept catching him out in defensive positions. Was not afforded the extra protection because of the midfield battle between the two teams. Better in second half when moved to midfield . WILLIAM SALIBA: 6 A fair display, competing well in the duels against Joelinton and Isak. GABRIEL: 6 Beaten in the air by Isak for the goal. MIKEL MERINO: 5.5 Static in the middle and seemed to get overrun. Team got better after his substitution. LEANDRO TROSSARD: 5.5 Off the pace and the things he attempted kept failing to come off. BUKAYO SAKA: 5.5 A very quiet first half. And in the second period he was often shut out. KAI HAVERTZ: 6 His best attributes, like physicality and duels, were nullified by the lack of creativity around him. GABRIEL MARTINELLI: 6 Kept getting the ball and drove forward. Carragher casts further doubt on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future

Jamie Carragher is “worried” about Trent Alexander-Arnold's future amid links with Real Madrid. The Reds academy graduate is out of contract at the end of the season. He would be eligible to open talks with foreign clubs as soon as January regarding a free transfer at the end of the campaign. Real Madrid have been the club linked the most prominently with a move for Alexander-Arnold as they aim to find a successor to veteran defender Dani Carvajal. And ex-Liverpool star Carragher has concerns that could potentially come to fruition in the near future. As quoted by BBC Sport, he said: “I'm pretty confident that the two older lads [Virgil Van Dijk and Mohammed Salah] will sign. They're at a stage where it's difficult to move on to a better club than Liverpool. “When I played, the two only clubs where players would want to move on to were the Spanish giants but I don't really see that now for Virgil and Mo - who will be desperate to break as many records as he can. “Trent is in a different situation, so that's the one most people will be worried about with the interest from Real Madrid and the fact that Dani Carvajal has done his ACL.” Liverpool boss Arne Slot has already issued his thoughts on his three contract rebels. Speaking last month, the Dutchman insisted that any ongoing talks or speculation would not affect their application on the pitch. “I think you underestimate our players,” he said. “These players are used to being linked with all the top clubs on a daily basis, if they have contracts or not. “If you think they’re disturbed by this interest then you don’t do justice to how strong they are mentally. This is part of our job. This is part of this world we are living in. You just focus on what you have to do. “Maybe if you’re 17 or 18 years of age it could be difficult for you. But Trent has won the league, has won the Champions League; Virgil and Mo the same. I don’t think that is a problem for them to perform and that’s what we see at the moment because they’re playing really well.” And Alexander-Arnold appears to have not let talk over his future affect his performances. The England defender has been a virtual ever-present under new boss Slot having made 13 appearances in all competitions, with two assists.
Flick delivers verdict on La Liga decision not to suspended matches amid Storm

This week, Spain – and the Valencia community in particular – has been devastated by Storm Dana. Over 90 people have denied as a result of the damage caused by the adverse weather, and it also led to two La Liga matches (Valencia-Real Madrid and Villarreal-Rayo Vallecano) being postponed. However, there is a feeling that the entire MD12 fixture schedule should have been played at a later date, with many feeling that now is not the time to focus on football. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick gave his thoughts on the subject when speaking ahead of Sunday’s fixture against Espanyol, as per MD. “I’m not sure (if the match should be postponed). We have Ferran who is from there. It is not easy to make a decision about what to do. Something similar happened three years ago in Germany. We support them, but it’s a matter that is decided by La Liga.” On the match itself, Flick made it known that his Barcelona side are fully focused on securing three points. “I know what this derby means. It will be a difficult match after a great week. It will be important to play 100% and with intensity. We always prepare well. It’s good to celebrate (our recent form) but we have to concentrate. In the session we concentrated a lot, the road is long. We are doing well and we have to be focused.”
Ipswich Town 1-1 Leicester City: Late Ayew strike denies hosts first win

Jordan Ayew's stoppage-time equaliser snatched a point for Leicester City, who held 10-man Ipswich Town to a 1-1 draw. The Foxes substitute cancelled out Leif Davis' volley earlier in the second half to deny the hosts' the first win of the season at Portman Road. Ipswich broke through 10 minutes after the restart when Davis marked his 100th appearance for the club with a superbly timed volley from Sam Morsy's crossfield pass. However, they were forced to finish the final 13 minutes a man light after Kalvin Phillips' dismissal for a second bookable offence. The hosts were given a scare when, within moments of his introduction, Ayew chipped Arijanet Muric, only to be thwarted on the line by Cameron Burgess. However, the Ghanaian and Leicester were not to be denied. In the 94th minute, Ayew played a neat one-two with Jamie Vardy before slotting home to ensure a share of the spoils. Data Debrief: Ipswich's wait goes on Ipswich have now failed to win any of their first 10 Premier League games this season. Only in 2009-10 (14) and 2018-19 (11) have they begun a league campaign with a longer winless streak. Having also let a two-goal lead slip at Brentford last time out, Kieran McKenna's side have now dropped a league-high 12 points from winning positions this term. As for Leicester, they left it late once more, with Ayew's 98th-minute winner sealing a 3-2 victory over Southampton from 2-0 down in their last league game away from home. The Foxes continue their record as one of only two sides - along with reigning champions Manchester City - to score in all 10 of their matches this season.
Guardiola & Walker highlight lack of recovery after shock defeat to Bournemouth

Pep Guardiola suggested the fact Man City had less time recovery time played a part in their shock defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson struck to seal a deserved 2-1 victory for the Cherries, who had never before beaten the Cherries in the league in their history. City exited the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday night, meaning they had three days' rest before the trip south, while Bournemouth had double that, having last played away at Aston Villa the Saturday prior. Defeat means Guardiola's side dropped to second, two points behind Liverpool, who came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1. "We could not match up the intensity of Bournemouth, who had six or seven days. There was less recovery from the trip from London," said the Spaniard. "We talked about that, we had to increase our duels in that position. They had chances, we created some, especially at the end. And we had our momentums, but the long balls, we could not defend them and when that happens, you have to defend so deep. "The guys gave everything. After nine years together, I know they gave it but not enough to compete against that team in that moment." In the lead-up to the game, Guardiola had spoken about how many of his players had a 50-50 chance of playing, with injuries currently causing problems for the reigning Premier League champions. Neither Savinho nor Kevin De Bruyne made it off the bench, while he spoke pre-match about how both Ruben Dias and John Stones were set for extended spells on the sidelines. "Kyle Walker has trained 16 days and not done a single session. He made an incredible effort," Guardiola added. "Yesterday was the first time we trained as a team. Manuel Akanji couldn't play in the last game because of a niggle. Nathan Ake is in the wars and made an incredible effort. "It's not just about that, but when you are in that position you have to do more in concentration and win a little bit more. "We knew Bournemouth have success in this part of the season and it's well-deserved of them. In other circumstances we could have defended our unbeaten record." Walker echoed his manager's sentiments when speaking toSky Sportson the south coast. "To come here and not get the win is always disappointing. Sometimes you have to play the game with, I think, emotion," he said. "When we've had the injuries we've got, the amount of time Bournemouth have had - six days - to prepare for this game, sometimes you need to play with your heart. "The last 10 minutes we came into it, but going 2-0 down was always going to be an uphill battle. "How Bournemouth attack, with the front three and runners in behind, everything has to be 100 per cent. The quality has to be very good, it's a different Bournemouth to what we've seen in the last couple of years. "They've got discipline and organisation. You can see that in the results they've picked up in recent weeks. "We're not using that as an excuse, we had people on the bench and start today who were fit to start. We have to give full credit to Bournemouth and move on to the next one." Who are Man City currently missing? Guardiola claimed his side had only 13 first-team players available to face Bournemouth after their 2-1 loss at Tottenham in the Carabao Cup in midweek. Already withoutWalker, Rodri, Oscar Bobb, Jeremy Doku, De BruyneandJack Grealish, Manuel Akanjiwas withdrawn ahead of kick-off, beforeSavinholeft on a stretcher in the second half in north London. However, walking wounded Walker and Akanji both returned to start at the Vitality, with Savinho, De Bruyne and Doku only fit enough to be substitutes - although only the latter of that trio made it off the bench. Meanwhile, centre-backsRuben DiasandJohn Stoneswere not involved in the squad, with Guardiola revealing the pair are now set for an extended spells on the sidelines, meaning the Premier League champions are now without these key players.
Man Utd decision was 'now or never' for Amorim
Ruben Amorim says the decision to move to Manchester United during the season was made for him, after he was told it was "now or never".The 39-year-old Sporting Lisbon coach is set to make the move to Manchester on November 11, despite wanting to wait until the end of the season to make the switch. Ruben Amorim says the decision to move to Manchester United during the season was made for him, after he was told it was "now or never". The 39-year-old Sporting Lisbon coach is set to make the move to Manchester on November 11, despite wanting to wait until the end of the season to make the switch. The move was announced on Friday, with Amorim agreeing on a contract that will keep him at the club until 2027. He becomes the sixth permanent manager at United since Alex Ferguson's departure 11 years ago. Sporting have made a flying start to the season with 10 wins from 10 putting them top of the Primeira Liga table, but Amorim was keen to attest he would have preferred to continue his victorious streak. "The season started, we started very well, and then Manchester United came, they pay above the compensation clause and the president defends the club's interests," he explained. "I never discussed anything with the president. For three days, I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season, but then I was told it was not possible. "It was now or never, or Manchester would go for another option. So, I had three days to make my mind up, to make a decision that radically changes my life." Amorim brought substantial success to the Portuguese capital, winning two league titles in the space of four seasons after the club had failed to do so in the 19 years prior. Despite being one of the most promising coaches in the game, the Lisbon-born manager asserted that only a call from Manchester would persuade him to leave his home club. "I've had other opportunities - the president and [director of football] Hugo Viana can confirm this," he added. "It's not the first or the second time that I have been requested by another team, and I don't want another team. "After Sporting I wanted that one, Manchester, and I want that context because that context allows me to do things my way, and the club believes me that way. "There's a time when I have to take a step forward in my career. That's what happened. It was harder for me than any Sporting fan, believe me, but I had to do this."
AC Milan open to selling Barcelona target Rafael Leao
Barcelona president Rafael Leao has a list of dream targets that he wants to sign for the Catalan giants, and in recent weeks, it is believed that Rafael Leao has been added to that for the left-wing position. Barcelona president Rafael Leao has a list of dream targets that he wants to sign for the Catalan giants, and in recent weeks, it is believed that Rafael Leao has been added to that for the left-wing position. Earlier this week, it was reported that Leao himself would consider leaving AC Milan as his relationship with head coach Paulo Fonseca has broken down significantly in recent weeks. This gives Barcelona a small window of opportunity, and it now appears that it can now be opened further. As per Relevo, Milan do not consider Leao to be non-transferable, meaning that they would be willing to sell if an acceptable offer were to arrive – be that from Barcelona or anyone else keen on the Portuguese superstar. It’s likely that Barcelona will look into signing a left winger in 2025, despite the strong form of Raphinha this season. Leao would be an excellent addition, although the club would surely need to raise a large amount of funds in order to be able to afford his asking price.

And the visitors knew their luck was out when Beto thought he’d levelled two minutes from the end only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check. Everton will feel distraught at the end of their five-game unbeaten run having dominated the second half but for under-fire Southampton manager Russell Martin, the result could be a life-saver with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale also making key saves. Given their predicament at the bottom of the table, the home side were disappointed not to have a shot on target in the first half though Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ missed with a close-range header and Cameron Archer dragged a shot wide when put through by Flynn Downes. But the only work Everton No1 Jordan Pickford had to do was push an Armstrong cross out of danger before anyone could get a tap-in at the far post. The visitors improved in the second half. Ashley Young, on his 400th Premier League start, set up Orel Mangala whose shot was brilliantly turned over by Ramsdale. The former Arsenal ‘keeper then turned a Michael Keane shot onto the post and clawed away a free-kick by Jesper Lindstrom heading to the top corner. Martin tried to change the narrative by sending on 18-year-old prodigy Tyler Dibling and he and Kyle Walker-Peters started to find joy combining down the right. However, they enjoyed a huge slice of good fortune when Beto diverted James Tarkowski’s cross onto the woodwork and Saints went up the other end to score. Sugawara’s intelligent low cross found Armstrong on the edge of the box and he rifled in his first Premier League goal of the season. Even then, Everton rallied again and thought they’d levelled when Beto controlled and flicked a finish past Ramsdale. It was an incredibly tight offside call. When it went in Southampton’s favour, Everton’s players were left sunk on their knees at the final whistle.
Ruben Amorim verdict delivered by former Man United star Nani
Nani has delivered his assessment of Ruben Amorim as the Sporting Lisbon boss prepares to follow his path from the Portuguese giants to Manchester United.Amorim was officially announced as Man United's new head coach on Friday, with the 39-year-old old taking up the position during the international break on November 11. Nani has delivered his assessment of Ruben Amorim as the Sporting Lisbon boss prepares to follow his path from the Portuguese giants to Manchester United. Amorim was officially announced as Man United's new head coach on Friday, with the 39-year-old old taking up the position during the international break on November 11. The confirmation came after a week of negotiations between the two clubs, as Man United acted quickly after sacking manager Erik ten Hag. As part of the agreement Amorim would remain in charge of three final Sporting matches, including crucial clashes with Man City in the Champions League and Braga in the Portuguese top flight. The first match came on Friday night with Sporting earning a dominant 5-1 win over Estrela Amadora, whose team featured former Man United star Nani. Nani, now 37, has offered his backing for Amorim to achieve success at Man United after praising his 'excellent job' at Sporting. ‘All I can say is good luck,' Nani told Sport TV. ‘He has done an excellent job at Sporting, and I hope he can do the same at United, which is a great club, one of the best clubs in the world. ‘I think he is in a great place; he will have the chance with excellent players to deliver a strong response, as he has all the conditions to do so.’ Nani received an ovation from the Sporting fans when he came on as a second half substitute for Estrela, his hometown club. The winger had come through Sporting's academy and played 136 times for the first team, scoring 31 goals, before moving to Man United for a reported £21m fee in 2007. Nani joined United in 2007 from Sporting Lisbon and went on to spend eight years at Old Trafford. During this time he won four Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. After leaving United in 2015, he had spells at Fenerbahce, Valencia and Lazio before moving to the US to play for Orlando City. A return to Italy followed as he joined Venezia prior to transfers to Melbourne Victory and Adana Demirspor. Amorim will make the same move as Nani from Sporting to Man United and the pair were seen in a warm embrace on the touchline following Friday's match. Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand revealed earlier this week that Nani had also given him more insight on Amorim. 'I spoke to Nani actually the other day and he said "Rio, whatever you want to talk about, tactics or whatever, the players play for him, they love him and they respect him",' Ferdinand said in a video posted on X. 'One of the issues I think with Erik ten Hag and what he [Nani] said about Amorim is he's very straight, very straight and very direct. 'From what I'm hearing, I'm talking to people that have played for [him] but also been around [him] as a human, I think the character and the charisma compared to Erik ten Hag will be the big differentiator, will be the big difference.' Amorim, who has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Man United, admitted post match that over the course of three days he was left to make what he feels is the biggest decision of his career to date. 'I was told it was now or never. I had three days to make my mind up,' he said. 'A decision that would radically change my life. I've had other opportunities. The president and [Hugo] Viana can confirm this. This is not the first or second time I have been requested. 'After Sporting, I wanted Manchester. There's a time I have to take a step forward. It was hard. I had to do this. 'I don't want to victimise myself. The only one in no-man's land was me. I didn't say it before because it had to be agreed between the clubs.'
Amorim press conference in full: New Man Utd manager gives very honest answers

RUBEN AMORIM held his first press conference since being confirmed as the new Manchester United manager on Friday night. Strangely, though, that came after his current side Sporting smashed Estrela Amadora 5-1. Amorim will take charge of two more matches as head coach in Portugal - against Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday and then his final game against former club Braga next Sunday. Then Amorim officially replaces Erik ten Hag as the new permanent Red Devils boss on November 11 after United stumped up £9.2million to get him out of his Sporting contract. And following Friday's announcement of his imminent arrival at Old Trafford, Amorim was quizzed on his new job. That included giving a host of very honest answers, including his January transfer plans. Here's what Amorim had to say... ON THE ANNOUNCEMENT “It was a very unusual week. “Obviously, since this whole situation came about I've felt different. I understand the anger of some fans and the disappointment. But that's life. I was moved by the ovation and that's how it is. "Even the other statement, when it came out, was on a match day. But clubs are now listed companies and they have to present all these things. FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS "There were two statements. But that's how things are, there are things that we can't control. " ON SPORTING FANS' REACTION “I'm very grateful to the fans and to everything here. People think I wanted to leave straight away. "In the next home game, whether we win or lose by 15-0, I'll be there to see what the fans want to give me. "I understand their anger, but we move on and time heals everything. It was the best period of my life." ON DECIDING THIS WAS HIS FINAL SEASON AT SPORTING "At the beginning of the season, and the chairman is there to confirm it, I had a conversation with him and director of football Hugo Viana. "I said that, whatever happened, it was my last season at Sporting. The president can confirm that. "The season started and we started to have a very good season. United came along, paid the clause, above the clause, and the chairman defended his interests. "I never discussed anything with the chairman." ON WANTING TO JOIN UNITED NEXT SUMMER "The only request I made to United was that it would be at the end of the season and they told me that wasn't possible, that it was now or never or Manchester would go for another option. "So I had three days to decide on something that would radically change my life." ON OTHER OFFERS "It's not the first time that I've been requested and had my clause paid by another club. Nor the second. It's very hard for me to leave. "I don't want another team. "After Sporting I wanted that one, Manchester, and I want that context because that context allows me to do things my way and the club believes me that way. "There's a time when I have to take a step forward in my career. That's what happened. "It was harder for me than for any Sporting fan, believe me, but I had to do this." ON DIFFICULT DECISION "There was no confusion at all. We have to safeguard everyone's interests. "Far from playing the victim, I'm sorry. "I said I would stay for as many games as necessary. I didn't say anything earlier because I couldn't. That's how the decision is. "The club knew that if I rejected it, I wouldn't have it in six months. And I knew that in six months I would know that I wouldn't be at Sporting. "The only club that I wanted and that moved me was United. It got to a point where I had to decide and I did. "Now I'm going home much more relaxed because I have explained. "People say 'it's about the money', but there was another team that wanted to hire me before and they paid three times more than Manchester." ON THREE MORE GAMES AT SPORTING AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT "I have to do what Sporting decides. I prefer it that way. "I don't leave the players in the lurch. "Against Nacional, I felt they were more anxious because I felt they didn't know what to expect. "I'm happy to stay and I won't leave my players in the lurch." ON SPEAKING TO ANY UNITED PLAYERS "As for United, I haven't spoken to anyone, not even the players. "I'm totally focused. "On the 11th we will have the opportunity to talk about Manchester United. At the moment I am at Sporting. "I wanted to explain all this to Sporting fans. The focus now is on Sporting. Then we will talk about Manchester United. "I changed my mind several times. My concern is not to harm the Sporting team, we'll see later. I'll have that concern when I'm at United." ON JANUARY SIGNINGS FROM SPORTING "Viktor Gyokeres costs 100m and it's very difficult. "I'm not going to get any players from Sporting in January. "I will take my staff with me. That was always one of my conditions. I brought them with me since Casa Pia. "What does it mean to me? It was the best period of my life. Everyone at Sporting knows how important it was to me. "I understand the disappointment of the fans and that leaving in the middle of a season that could be historic. "But today is not the farewell, we still have two important games against City and Braga, to maintain our lead."
Inigo Martinez labels Barcelona teammates as “absent-minded”
Inigo Martinez has been one of several revelations for Barcelona this season. At the end of the previous campaign, he was considered to be fourth-choice centre-back, and while that could still be the case once Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen once they return from long-term injuries, he has thrown down the gauntlet to be a nailed starter. Alongside Pau Cubarsi, Martinez has been excellent, and there is no doubt that Hansi Flick will have also been very pleased with his performances. The experience defender spoke on his adaption to the German manager’s style of play, as per Sport. “Flick, from the moment he arrived, had things clear, how he wanted us to play. In the end, even taking risks, I think it gives us more benefits than anything else. So, we continue with our philosophy, our idea. We do a lot of damage every time we steal. The fact that the opponent enters many times offside is usually complicated for them. You saw it in the last match. We enjoy ourselves. In the back you don’t enjoy much, to be honest, but we enjoy something.” Martinez also spoke on Barcelona’s well-documented high defensive line, that has been responsible for so many opposition offsides. He is happy with the risk, although he also jokingly called out two of his fellow defenders for not always being alert to the dangers. “Obviously, when you have fast strikers who know how you play and you see 50 meters behind you, of course you suffer. It is not easy, but when the back four get along so well, they are absolutely sure that 9 times out of 10 they will be offside. So, we take risks, it’s our way of playing. We are doing well and we will continue to do so. “Balde is the most absent-minded of all on the back line, although Jules (Kounde) is also absent-minded from time to time, but hey, I have him much further away than Balde. It’s also true that he usually has to put up with me a lot during the game.”
Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal 'DESERVED to lose' against Newcastle
Mikel Arteta admitted his Arsenal side deserved to lose against Newcastle United as their title hopes were dealt a hammer blow.Alexander Isak’s first-half header subjected the Gunners to a third consecutive league match without a win. Mikel Arteta admitted his Arsenal side deserved to lose against Newcastle United as their title hopes were dealt a hammer blow. Alexander Isak’s first-half header subjected the Gunners to a third consecutive league match without a win. It follows the 2-2 draw against Liverpool and 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, which now sees the north London club on the edge of crashing out of title contention. A frustrated Arteta said: ‘We deserved to lose today. I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn't defend the box well enough, credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball. ‘Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn't do that well enough. I am very frustrated. ‘We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn't play the game that we wanted. ‘We had two big chances — Mikel (Merino) had a big one, Declan (Rice) had a big one. We lacked answers.’ On their proximity to Man City in the title race, he added: ‘I understand that, but after eight, nine or 10 games last year we didn’t (talk about it) and we won’t talk about it now. ‘It’s about how you react to that. We’re not going to find the right words or answers to describe how we feel. We have to put it on that field on Wednesday night against Inter (Milan).’ William Saliba, who returned from a one-game suspension, was similarly frustrated by the display and echoed his manager’s assessment. Saliba said: ‘We are all a bit sad because we wanted to win today. Unfortunately we didn't and we didn't play the game we wanted to play. We deserved to lose today I think. ‘I have to be better than my last game. I was not so good. I have to be back at my good level. After I will be good we will better but I have to work to get back to my best level.’ Eddie Howe was effusive of the Magpies after Newcastle broke a five-game winless streak in the league with an inspired performance. Howe said: ‘You have to be really strong mentality and know results will turn if you continue to do the right things. ‘Today's performance was built on hard work, desire and a lot of really good defending in the second half. I thought we looked good.’ On Arteta’s comment of Newcastle dragging teams into the style of game ‘they are looking for constantly’, he added: ‘It’s irrelevant to me what anyway says really, apart from my team. That’s how we’ve always looked at it. ‘There is always outside noise, wherever it comes. We just try to do what we do to try and win games on a consistent basis.’
MU tipped for DISMAL finish by supercomputer despite Amorim's imminent arrival
Manchester United have been tipped to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League while City will narrowly pip Arsenal to the title in a thrilling three-way race. That is according to the latest predictions from a supercomputer, via JeffBet, which has determined the most probable places for each side at the end of the season. Manchester United have been tipped to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League while City will narrowly pip Arsenal to the title in a thrilling three-way race. That is according to the latest predictions from a supercomputer, via JeffBet, which has determined the most probable places for each side at the end of the season. United yesterday officially announced Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag's successor at Old Trafford but must wait until November 11 for the 39-year-old to take charge, with Ruud van Nistelrooy extending his interim spell until the international break. Ten Hag was dismissed the day after the dismal 2-1 defeat by West Ham and judging from the computer's latest forecast, there is plenty of work to be done for Amorim. Indeed, the Red Devils could be set for a lowly 12th-placed finish despite the drastic change in the dugout. They have not dropped below 10th place since placing 13th in 1990 under Sir Alex Ferguson - a campaign in which they also won the FA Cup. This campaign, United may have to settle for a tally of just 50 points, a figure that would push them below Brentford (ninth), Nottingham Forest (10th) and Bournemouth (11th) and keep them level with the Hammers. At the opposite end of the table, the AI has calculated that City will win a fifth straight title, ahead of Mikel Arteta's challengers on goal difference. Both heavyweights have been tipped to finish with 95 points apiece. Liverpool, meanwhile, would therefore have to settle for third place despite Arne Slot's near-perfect start to his debut season in England. Despite them sitting second at present, and just one point behind City, the AI believes the Reds will drop as far as seven points off the pace on 88. Enzo Maresca's Chelsea would take 76 points should the supercomputer prove correct, enough to leave them fourth and back in the Champions League. Aston Villa and Brighton are fifth and sixth respectively in this scenario while Newcastle would edge off competition from Tottenham to finish seventh. In the relegation zone, newcomers Southampton and Ipswich have been tipped to drop back down to the Championship at the first time of asking. According to the computer, they will also be joined by Gary O'Neil's Wolves. As reported by Mail Sport, O'Neil maintains the immediate backing of the hierarchy at Molineux but is focusing mounting pressure to turn the club's season around.
Inside Gerrard's stunning mansion as Liverpool legend battles to save Saudi job
Steven Gerrard issued a defiant message this week that he wants to carry on as manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, despite calls for his resignation.Gerrard is 16 months into his £15.2m-a-year contract at Al-Ettifaq, and led the club to sixth place in the Saudi Pro League last season. Steven Gerrard issued a defiant message this week that he wants to carry on as manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, despite calls for his resignation. Gerrard is 16 months into his £15.2m-a-year contract at Al-Ettifaq, and led the club to sixth place in the Saudi Pro League last season. But they are down in 10th place this term having failed to register a league win since September 14, and slumped to a new low on Wednesday when they were beaten 3-1 by lower league outfit Al-Jabalain to exit the King Cup at the last-16 stage. At a press conference on Friday, Gerrard hit back at claims he scheduled training sessions around Liverpool matches and vowed to continue working to deliver success at the Saudi Pro League club. 'My main importance is this job and trying to make this club in the best possible way on and off the field,' Gerrard said. ‘I am all in and I will continue to be all in.’ Gerrard's family have also been all-in to supporting his efforts at the club having moved to the Middle East after he accepted the £15.2m-a-year role. The family had turned down a house near his job in Dammam - where Al-Ettifaq are based - and opted to settle down in Bahrain. Bahrain's capital is located just an hours’ drive from Dammam, enabling the former Liverpool star to easily commute to work. The country has more relaxed laws than Saudi Arabia, where alcohol is banned, and several WAGS have complained of cultural restrictions being placed on them and facing abuse over how they are dressed. Some claimed that they have even been refused entry to shops and malls for showing off part of their arms, legs or chest. Gerrard's wife Alex Curran, however, is said to be living a 'dream life' in their £10k- a-month mansion in Hamala, Bahrain. The family live in a luxury six-bedroom villa in the Hamala area of the city close to members of Bahrain’s royal family and others from the country’s elite. It costs around £10,000 per month and comes with its own swimming pool, tennis court and games room and is in a compound behind a high gate. The family have been able to enjoy Bahrain’s lavish malls, restaurants and bars which have earned it the reputation of being the party capital of the Gulf region. As part of his contract, Gerrard and his family have also been given free membership of the country’s two most exclusive health clubs which are based at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel and the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The couple, who married in 2007, share three girls and a boy; Lilly Ella, 20; Lexie, 17; Lourdes, 12 and Lio, 7. They are enrolled at Bahrain’s most exclusive English language school, which is in the world’s top 100 and where fees are almost £11,000 per year each. The Gerrards are regular visitors to the Ritz’s open-air bar, located close to its private beach, where Premier League games are shown on giant screens. They have also been seen at Bahrain Rugby Club, an exclusive expat hangout which is made up of pristine sports pitches. The club has a large sports bar where the former Liverpool legend has reportedly enjoyed a pint and chats with the locals. For Alex, one of her favourite destinations is Manama’s World Trade Centre which houses over 80 luxury fashion labels - including Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Versace. Another location in the country where she has been spotted strolling in the sunshine is the Avenues, a stylish waterfront shopping centre with over 130 leading brands and more than 60 restaurants and cafes. Gerrard, however, is facing a fight to remain in his lucrative Saudi Pro League job. Supporters have turned on the Liverpool legend, while several Saudi pundits have suggested Gerrard should resign from his position. Reports had emerged that Gerrard could leave the club following a meeting with Hatim Al Misehal, Al-Ettifaq's head of football. Gerrard confirmed he had meet with the official on Thursday as part of a typical meeting, while he vowed to fight on despite increasing pressure around the team's results. 'On the back of recent results in my position you are always aware of disappointment from fans, I have to take that responsibility on my shoulders,' Gerrard said on Friday. ‘That is what I will do and continue to fight and work to improve the recent results. 'I don’t react, change or get overconcerned about social media or anyone on the outside of Ettifaq’s opinion, my priority is this club. ‘I listen to the people within and continue to support my players. 'I meet Mr Hatim after every game and we talk football, where it is a win, loss or draw, we have fantastic support, myself, the staff and the players from the management team. 'We did meet yesterday but we meet after every single game. He added: 'I want to make it abundantly clear my priority is Ettifaq, I have a contract with Ettifaq and I am in a real privileged position. ‘I respect all my previous clubs, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Rangers and LA Galaxy, but my main importance is this job and trying to make this club in the best possible way on and off the field. ‘I am all in and I will continue to be all in.’
Liverpool 2-1 Brighton PLAYER RATINGS: Who was 'unusually quiet' for the Reds?

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League on a successful Saturday for the Reds as they came from behind against Brighton. Ferdi Kadioglu put a spanner in the works for the away side, who had impressed early on, but the Reds turned on the style in the second half to ensure they took all three points. It was Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah on the score sheet for the Reds, who benefitted from both Arsenal and Manchester City coming up short and both tasting defeat. But how did the players fare individually? A few struggled, while others stepped up to the plate to get Arne Slot's side over the line. Mail Sport's AADAM PATEL was at Anfield to rate the players. Liverpool (4-3-3) Caiomhin Kelleher - 6 Couldn't do anything for Kadioglu's goal but made a big save to deny Georginio Rutter, as well as two more important saves. Got away with one in the second half when he lost the ball but continues to be a reliable deputy to Alisson. Trent Alexander-Arnold - 6 An unusually quiet first-half where he struggled to make his mark on the game and was kept busy defensively by Kaoru Mitoma. Lost the ball carelessly on a couple of occasions but showed his usual quality after the break. Ibrahima Konate - 6 Made his ninth league start in a row - his best ever run for Liverpool. But his afternoon was cut short at half-time as he walked off using his shirt like a makeshift sling after landing awkwardly on his shoulder from a Liverpool corner. Looks set to be out of action for a while. Virgil van Dijk - 6 Another usually reliable name who was off the pace. Accidentally took out Kostas Tsimikas and part of a back four that Brighton cut through with ease in the first half. Missed a sitter shortly after the break but ultimately that didn't cost his side. Kostas Tsimikas - 6 Started ahead of Andy Robertson and put in a solid shift. Was relentless up and down the left flank. One of his best performances in a Liverpool shirt. Dominik Szoboszlai - 6 Dominated by the Brighton midfield in the first half with Jack Hinshelwood and Yasin Ayari a step ahead of him. Much more aggression and intent in the second half before he was taken off for Luis Diaz as Liverpool hunted an equaliser. Ryan Gravenberch - 6 Cut a frustrated figure in the first half as Liverpool struggled but much improved after the break as Liverpool turned the game around. He is having such a good season. Alexis MacAllister - 5.5 Playing against his old club and like most of the Liverpool side, had a first half to forget. Booked for bringing down Danny Welbeck. Came close to equalising after the break but his header was kept out by the magnificent Bart Verbruggen. Replaced by Curtis Jones in the 66th minute. Mohamed Salah - 8 A quiet first half and wasted a golden opportunity shortly after the break, but scored an absolute belter to give Liverpool the lead. The Egyptian now has 164 Premier League goals - putting him eighth on the list of the Premier League's all-time top goal scorers. A class apart and the difference maker, yet again. Darwin Nunez - 7 A superb shift, again. Did brilliant early on with a run from the centre of the pitch before his effort was tipped away by Verbruggen and constantly caused problems for Brighton. Taken off for Wataru Endo in the 77th minute as Arne Slot looked to see the game out. Cody Gakpo - 7.5 Only player who remained in the starting eleven from Liverpool's midweek win in the Carabao Cup at Brighton. Hardly got a sniff in the first half but much better in second, getting the equaliser - albeit with a slice of a luck. Constantly offered a threat. Substitutes Joe Gomez - 6 Came on at half-time for Konate and did well as Liverpool came from behind to win. Nearly scored too but his header was saved by Verbruggen. Curtis Jones - 7.5 Changed the game when he came on in the 66th minute. Influential in the move for Salah's goal, getting the assist. A transformed player under Arne Slot. Wataru Endo - 6 On late on to help Liverpool see the game out. Job well done. Conor Bradley - 5 Came on for Salah in added time. Manager Arne Slot - 7 Will be questioning what on earth his team were doing in the first half but they came out firing after the break and all his changes were justified. 25 points in 10 games and top of the league. He could hardly have asked for a better start to life as Liverpool manager. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0B/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcmY8CAb0bKAADSOsGgOso370.jpg Brighton (4-4-2) Verbruggen 7; Veltman 6 (Gruda 76), Van Hecke 6, Julio 6, Estupinan 6; Kadioglu 7.5 (Moder 87), Hinshelwood 7 (Ferguson 87), Ayari 7 (Wieffer 76), Mitoma 7 (Adingra 87); Rutter 6, Welbeck 7. QPR 0-0 Sunderland: Jobe Bellingham sent off as Black Cats held

Jobe Bellingham was sent off as Sky Bet Championship leaders Sunderland were held to a 0-0 draw at QPR. Bellingham was shown the red card 13 minutes into the second half for a crude challenge on Zan Celar as the Black Cats midfielder was trying to retain possession after a heavy touch. Struggling Rangers, one off the bottom of the table of the table and still without a home win this season, were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage. However, a second successive goalless draw against one of the division's heavyweights - they held Burnley in their previous match - seems like another step in the right direction for Marti Cifuentes' side. With a number of players already sidelined, Rangers suffered another blow when key defender Jake Clarke-Salter was ruled out because of a recurring calf problem. It meant Sam Field, usually a midfielder, was deployed as a centre-back, but QPR defended well and created several openings. Sunderland went closest to scoring in the first half when Dan Neil volleyed against the post from near the edge of the penalty area. Wilson Isidor missed a chance for the visitors, shooting wide after being found by Trai Hume, who also fired an effort wide. Rangers threatened as well in the first half and striker Celar, yet to score since his summer move to west London, missed an early chance to put them ahead. Paul Smyth linked up nicely with Nicolas Madsen and crossed towards Celar, who was unable to sort his feet out and clumsily shot wide of the target. QPR also threatened from a couple of Ilias Chair corners, with Field heading straight at goalkeeper Simon Moore and Jimmy Dunne flicking the ball just wide. Chair curled a free-kick over the bar early in the second half, while Patrick Roberts went close at the other end when he cut in from the right flank and saw his left-footed strike deflect narrowly wide. Sunderland were below par but still dangerous when attacking and would have hoped to turn the screw as the game went on but they were dealt a major blow when they were reduced to 10 men. Bellingham's dismissal galvanised Rangers and Celar fired just wide of the far post before Dunne's header was saved by Moore. As QPR tried in vain to break the deadlock late on, youngster Kieran Morgan - making his full debut - sent two strikes wide and Moore held a dangerous cross from substitute Lucas Andersen.
Fabio Paim claims he was BETTER than Ronaldo, but ended up as a PORNSTAR!
Over the past two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game. But there was a time in his young career when he may not even have been the best player in his academy team. Over the past two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game. But there was a time in his young career when he may not even have been the best player in his academy team. Starting out at Sporting Lisbon, Ronaldo came through the ranks with another winger by the name of Fabio Paim. Rumour has it that Paim was the more talented of the pair. Or at least that's what he will tell you. According to Paim, who is now 36, he was destined for stardom and a better career than Ronaldo, but his work ethic let him down. 'He grew up with me, we spent a long time together,' Paim explained in a recent interview with Globo Esporte as he reflected on his relationship with Ronaldo. 'I was Sporting's number one at that time. Cristiano started to be Cristiano when he went to Manchester. Even then, nobody knew he would become what he is today. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0A/720x-/-/-/CgAGVmcmWqCAA4aCAACy7eiLN4I575.jpg 'Today Cristiano is the king, Paim is nobody. And people say "oh, he's a liar, he wasn't better". But the truth is that I was better than him and everyone knows that. I had more talent. But talent is nothing, talent is just a little bit. If you don't have the rest, you'll be nobody.' So, is Paim telling the truth? A quote attributed to Ronaldo from when he first joined Manchester United in 2003 indicates that he might be. Having rocked up at Old Trafford as a wiry teenager, Ronaldo is reported to have told the media: 'If you think I'm good, wait until you see Fabio Paim'. They nearly got their chance in 2008 when Paim moved to Chelsea on loan. He joined Luiz Felipe Scolari's side as a 20-year-old just months after Chelsea had narrowly missed out on winning the Champions League and rubbed shoulders with the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba. However, his time in west London proved disastrous, as despite earning almost £50,000-a-month, he failed to make a single senior appearance. After four months of being restricted to playing for the reserves, he returned to Portugal. From there, Paim's career rather petered out. The exciting talent that was supposed to be the next big thing never won a single international cap for Portugal, and ended up playing his football in obscure leagues in Angola, Qatar, Lithuania and Hungary before hanging his boots up following a spell in Poland in 2021. Was it all just about his lack of work ethic? A deeper look into Paim's life indicates that his off-field behaviour may also have played a part in him failing to live up to his potential. Paim has faced accusations of rape twice, in Portugal in 2012 and then again three years later in Lithuania. On both occasions, the cases did not lead to trials. But in 2019, he did end up in jail after being arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. Paim spent a year at Caxias Prison in Lisbon, and revealed in an interview with The Sun last year that he was able to watch his former team-mate Ronaldo train from his cell. 'From jail, I could see the Portuguese national team's training ground,' he explained. He may have wanted to be out on the pitch with Ronaldo, but those days were long gone. Still, that hasn't stopped Paim reminiscing about the past. After being released from jail, Paim went on a podcast hosted by PT Clipes, and made a cheeky request to Ronaldo. 'I said when I was happy that I thought Cristiano Ronaldo could offer me a Ballon d'Or,' Paim said. 'But it was with humility. If I had half of Cristiano's head, it wouldn't be him and Messi. 'It would be me, him and Messi and maybe he wouldn't have won the Ballon d'Ors that he has. Maybe one of them was mine.' Ronaldo responded in brutal fashion on Instagram, writing: 'Wtf??? Who is this guy?' but Paim has insisted this was a tongue-in-cheek comment from his ex-team-mate. Those dreams of Ballon d'Ors and sharing the pitch with Ronaldo again are over, though, as Paim has decided to go down a completely new career path. He recently announced that he is now a pornstar, and he shot his first film in September. The feedback was positive, with Diana Melancia, one of two women who performed alongside Paim in a sex tape that went on sale overnight for £65 on Telegram, telling The Sun: 'We thought he was going to be nervous and it wouldn't work out - but Fabio turned out to be a lion. 'He was good at football and he is good at porn. He's going to be a success. I hope this film is the first of many with Paim.' Paim himself is pleased with the reaction to his career switch, having been thrust back into the spotlight in recent months. 'Here in Portugal [the news about the pornographic film] is all the rage, everyone is going crazy,' he told Globo Esporte. 'Do you know why? Because people don't take it the wrong way, that's just how I am. On a podcast, I said that my dream was to be a pornographic actor. I got a lot of offers. I was on the news, I was on the front pages of newspapers... And I hadn't done anything. 'Since everyone was talking about it, [I thought] let's make a film. And I did. I'll tell you one thing. It's good to have sex and still get paid for it.' Paim has been tipped to succeed in his new industry, but he was also expected to thrive as a footballer. After troubles on and off the pitch for the best part of 20 years, Paim is now looking to put that behind him as he begins his next adventure.
Arsenal deserved to lose against Newcastle, says Arteta

Mikel Arteta was left frustrated by Arsenal's performance in their 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle United on Saturday. The defeat left them third in the Premier League, though they could be up to eight points behind Manchester City by the end of the day. Arsenal had 63.9% possession and mustered more shots (10) and a higher expected goals total (1.11) than Newcastle, but could not find a leveller following Alexander Isak's early header. And Arteta was disappointed with how his side did the basics following what he thought was a good start. "We deserved to lose today. I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn't defend the box well enough," he told Premier League Productions. "Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball. "Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn't do that well enough. I am very frustrated. "We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn't play the game that we wanted." Arsenal only managed one shot on target in the match, coming from a Mikel Merino effort that was cleared off the line in the first half. Declan Rice, meanwhile, put a close-range header wide in second-half stoppage time. "We had two big chances: Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers," said Arteta. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, meanwhile, was delighted with the Magpies' performance as they sealed back-to-back victories following their win over Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday. "You have to be really strong mentality and know results will turn if you continue to do the right things," Howe told BBC Sport. "It has been a difficult week with the fixtures, but the players have done really well. "There was a better feeling in training after the Chelsea win, as if pressure lifted slightly. "Today's performance was built on hard work, desire and a lot of really good defending in the second half. I thought we looked good." Isak headed home from a pinpoint Anthony Gordon cross to tally up his third goal in three successive appearances in all competitions. "I wouldn't say it is a trademark goal for Alex but really pleased to see it. Anthony can give you that on his natural right-hand side and it was a great ball," said Howe. "It was always going to take a moment like that as it was a game of few chances."
Former PL striker's son nets 20-minute hat-trick after coming on at half-time
Manchester City remained top of Premier League 2 - an Under-21 development league for academies - on Friday night by earning a crushing 5-0 win over Norwich. The home side had been 1-0 up at half-time through Emilio Lawrence's strike, but blew their opponents away in the second half. Manchester City remained top of Premier League 2 - an Under-21 development league for academies - on Friday night by earning a crushing 5-0 win over Norwich. The home side had been 1-0 up at half-time through Emilio Lawrence's strike, but blew their opponents away in the second half. The crushing scoreline had much to do with a former Premier League striker's son, who was introduced at half-time for goalscorer Lawrence. Within 20 minutes, the forward had netted a hat-trick to put Man City 4-0 up. He then provided the assist to round off the victory to keep Man City top of the standings. It capped a remarkable week for Reigan Heskey, one of the son's of former Premier League and England striker Emile. Reigan had earlier in the week scored a stunning curling effort in the EFL, before he and his brother Jaden helped Man City win the penalty shoot-out. His impact was more devastating on Friday night, scoring his first goal within two minutes of his arrival by showing his poacher's instincts to tap home from a cross from close range. The goal marked the 16-year-old's first at Premier League 2 level, as he continues to step up from the Under-18s, where he has six goals and assisted four in seven matches. His second followed soon after with the composed finish in the 53rd minute, slotting calmly into the far corner. The hat-trick was completed when Reigan's curling right footed effort could only be helped into the net by Norwich's goalkeeper. A fine evening's work was capped off by assisting a goal for Will Dickson in the last minute, as Man City wrapped up a seventh straight win in the competition. Regian offered an understatement post-match, when he told a Man City's club interview that it was a 'good performance'. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0B/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcmXiKAFyrIAADUArF_K6I649.jpg 'I came on and made an impact which is what I try to do every time so it was a good performance,' he said. 'Every team wants to be top [of the table], you want to win every game week in, week out. 'The pressure of having them [other teams] behind us gives us motivation to play well every week.' His brother Jaden had also played the full match in midfield on Friday night. Reigan will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his father Emile, who is a Premier League legend, having scored 110 goals in 516 matches for teams such as Leicester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa. Heskey also overcame setback after setback to keep his place in the national team and eventually finished his career with 62 caps. Having lost his spot after a disappointing Euro 2004 campaign, the forward impressed for his club sides to claw his way back into the England setup, making a shock return for Fabio Capello's team in the 2010 World Cup. During his spell at Newcastle Jets in Australia in 2012, Emile's sons Jaden and Reigan, aged four and six at the time, could be seen stealing the show on the pitch after matches, kitted out in special 'Heskey' shirts. Their father is now the head of football development for Leicester City Women, having previously had a spell as interim coach of the team. Earlier this year Heskey was ordered to pay a bill for legal fees of almost £200,000 after a lengthy dispute with HMRC regarding an unpaid tax bill which dated back to 2019. Reigan will be hoping his stunning form continues in midweek when Man City face Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Youth League.
Preston 1-3 Bristol City: Nahki Wells and Max Bird score as Robins win

Yu Hirakawa controversially gave Bristol City a helping hand in their 3-1 victory over Preston in the Sky Bet Championship. The 23-year-old used his hand to take the ball away from Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to score a sixth-minute opener for the visitors. Sam Greenwood's free-kick in the 48th minute levelled proceedings but Nahki Wells' header quickly put the Robins back in front and Max Bird sealed the points late on, condemning Paul Heckingbottom to his first league defeat at Deepdale since becoming Preston manager. North End had conceded eight goals in their last three games coming into this fixture and Heckingbottom would still have been frustrated with his players at the back, despite the impending controversy. Liam Lindsay and Woodman both failed to take charge of Jordan Storey's header backwards and Hirakawa punched the ball past the Preston goalkeeper before rolling into an empty net. Bristol City were looking comfortable in their defensive shape but Haydon Roberts, who came on as a first-half substitute for the injured George Tanner, was called into brilliant last-ditch action on the stroke of the interval, sliding low to divert Greenwood's superb cross away from the foot of Mads Frokjaer at the far post. However, minutes after the interval, Preston's territorial pressure did reap its rewards and it was the lively Greenwood who delivered. Luke McNally initially brought the 22-year-old down on the edge of the box and Greenwood picked himself up to slam the resulting free-kick past Max O'Leary at his near post, making it three goals in his last three league matches for the Lilywhites. It was the perfect start to the second half for the hosts but, inexplicably, they found themselves behind just four minutes later as Wells was left free in the centre of the box to guide a header into the far corner for his fourth goal of the season. Efficiency was the word of the day with three goals from just three shots on target but O'Leary did get his gloves a little dirty on the hour mark, comfortably claiming a tame Lindsay header at the back post. But the game could have been wrapped up just three minutes later as Bird dragged wide from a great position after being picked out by Hirakawa. This truly felt like foreshadowing as Bird again linked up with his Japanese team-mate in the 82nd minute and, from an almost identical position to his chance earlier, the midfielder wrapped the match up with a powerful finish into the far corner.
Pep Guardiola admits his tired players 'couldn't handle' Bournemouth's onslaught
Pep Guardiola blamed a lack of ‘intensity’ from his injury-hit side after Manchester City surrendered their place at the top of the Premier League with a shock 2-1 loss at Bournemouth.Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson, before a late reply from Josko Gvardiol, inflicted City’s first top-flight defeat since December 6 and their second straight loss in all competitions after the Carabao Cup exit to Tottenham on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola blamed a lack of ‘intensity’ from his injury-hit side after Manchester City surrendered their place at the top of the Premier League with a shock 2-1 loss at Bournemouth. Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson, before a late reply from Josko Gvardiol, inflicted City’s first top-flight defeat since December 6 and their second straight loss in all competitions after the Carabao Cup exit to Tottenham on Wednesday. Having seen that 32-game unbeaten run go up in smoke, allowing Liverpool to go top with their 2-1 win over Brighton, Guardiola admitted his tired players ‘couldn’t handle’ the onslaught from Bournemouth. He said: ‘We couldn’t match up to the intensity. All the situations with the long balls, we couldn’t win it. ‘In the game, for many reasons, they were higher than us. We have players with rhythm and the other players have a lack of rhythm because we could not train due to injuries. But we knew it.’ He added: ‘It is what it is (with the injuries). We have few players with a lot of minutes and a lot of players with no minutes to the balance is a bit uncomfortable. We played good against Spurs but today we could not handle their intensity that they had and that's why we lost the game.’ Guardiola had been forced to include Kyle Walker on the back of only six minutes of training in the past three weeks because of the injury crisis. Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji had also been forced into the line-up despite pre-match doubts around their fitness. With the Champions League tie against Ruben Amorim’s Sporting on Tuesday, Guardiola revealed Ruben Dias will not be fit for the trip to the Portugal and John Stones, who missed the defeat at Bournemouth, is also a doubt with a foot problem. By winning, Bournemouth ended a streak of 14 straight league defeats to City, amassed at the startling aggregate of 45-7. Andoni Iraola said: ‘I think it's very difficult to beat City. You have to enjoy it at least today. ‘Tomorrow we will start thinking on Brentford. But apart from the result, I'm very, very proud of the performance. I think to beat them, I think deservedly, is even more difficult. ‘Even if we suffered until the end because they pushed us in the last minutes. We had to feel the pressure and it was tight at the end. You don't enjoy that at all. There was so much pressure. ‘I'm very pleased, one thing is to beat City but another is to play better. We played with no fear, tried to press when we could and defend when we had to.’
City 'could not handle' Bournemouth, says Guardiola after shock defeat
Pep Guardiola admitted Manchester City "could not handle" the intensity of Bournemouth after falling to a 2-1 defeat on the south coast.Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson saw City fall to a 2-0 deficit for the first time since January 2023 (against Tottenham), before Josko Gvardiol headed in what proved to be a consolation late on. Pep Guardiola admitted Manchester City "could not handle" the intensity of Bournemouth after falling to a 2-1 defeat on the south coast. Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson saw City fall to a 2-0 deficit for the first time since January 2023 (against Tottenham), before Josko Gvardiol headed in what proved to be a consolation late on. The defending champions had been struggling with injuries in the build-up to the fixture, leading to a bench with an average age of 23 years old. Guardiola blamed those injury troubles for his side's failure to get back in the game at the Vitality Stadium. "We knew we couldn't match the intensity. We have talked about it. It was an open game. We had chances at the end but I congratulate Bournemouth for the victory," he told BBC Sport. "The 50-50 balls in the middle, the duels, they play this type of game. They are so aggressive. They had six, seven days to prepare. They have physicality and speed, but you have to win these types of situations. "We have few players with a lot of minutes and a lot of players with no minutes to the balance is a bit uncomfortable. We played good against Spurs but today we could not handle their intensity that they had and that's why we lost the game." City still managed to accumulate a higher expected goals (xG) total, finishing on 1.8 compared to Bournemouth's 1.74. That was boosted significantly when struggling Erling Haaland saw a header saved in stoppage time before crashing the rebound against the base of the post from close range. "We had real good moments at the start of the second half and after that it was difficult to swallow as we were good. After we scored we had momentum and chances but couldn't score [again]," added Guardiola. It was an entirely different story for the hosts, who registered a third home victory on the bounce, after defeating City's title rivals Arsenal in October. "It was a great game. We did everything we could. We needed our very best performance and not the greatest game [from City] and that happened. It is very good to beat City and even better to beat them deservedly," enthused Andoni Iraola. "It is very difficult. They are a great team. They have amazing subs and you have to suffer, stay compact. We suffered after a good game. We had the chance to finish it and not suffer too much at the end, but now we have to enjoy it. “We know there are better teams than us but it is not easy to play here and we have to keep this level so everyone knows that when they come here it will not be an easy game." The victory came in no small part due to the standout performances of Semenyo and Milos Kerkez Semenyo was central to every Bournemouth attack and accumulated 0.56 xG and created three chances, the highest in his team. Kerkez proved instrumental, too, delivering both assists off the left wing, first beating Kyle Walker to drive to the byline and cut back for Semenyo's opener, before providing a brilliant cross for Evanilson to prod in Bournemouth's second. "They played very well the last few games and today they had the finishing product. Milos had two assists, we felt he deserved to get the numbers and I am happy as it was a complete performance," added Iraola. "To beat a team like City you need everyone to play really well and they did."
Wilson eyed by FOUR Premier League clubs for January move despite his injury

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is reportedly being eyed by four Premier League clubs in January. Wilson has been at St James' Park since joining from Bournemouth in September 2020. The 32-year-old was very much Newcastle's main man up front initially but his role has been reduced slightly following the arrival of Alexander Isak in August 2022. Wilson has not yet played for the Magpies this season after suffering a back injury during the summer. He is expected to return to fitness in the coming weeks but could head for the exit in January, with Brentford, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Southampton all monitoring the striker according to The Sun. Wilson's current deal expires in the summer and would be able to walk away freely as it stands after five years in Tyneside - meaning they may cash in in January. Brentford are said to be leading the race to sign the former Bournemouth striker as they seek to replace Ivan Toney. The Bees sold star striker Toney to Saudi side Al-Ahli on August 30. Meanwhile, Fulham are also understood to be keen to bolster their attacking options, which currently include Raul Jimenez, Jay Stansfield and Rodrigo Muniz. Wilson is open to leaving St James' Park now that he is second choice to Isak, who scored the winner in Newcastle's win over Arsenal on Saturday. The club is unlikely to get in the way of a transfer given the striker's age and his injury problems. He has made 108 appearances for the club since joining from Bournemouth in 2020, scoring 48 goals in that time.

Caoimhin Kelleher came to Liverpool's rescue to deny Georginio Rutter after he had been picked out by Yasin Ayari's searching pass in behind Virgil van Dijk. Danny Welbeck then curled a free-kick narrowly wide before sending another set-piece close, with Brighton ending the half in the ascendency. The Seagulls registered seven shots to Liverpool's five, while also accumulating a 0.78 expected goals (xG) tally compared to the Reds' 0.71 before the break. "We needed another second-half performance because we were outplayed in the first half. They were better on the ball, more aggressive without the ball," Slot said. "Then, everything changed in the second half because it was completely the opposite. "Our attackers scored the goals but the main difference was we were better positioned and we had the ball a lot more. "Without the ball they made problems for us but in the second half we just kept running." The win was Slot's eighth in the Premier League, the most of any Liverpool boss in their first 10 top-flight games. But the difference proved to be in the Dutchman's substitutes, with both goals coming after the introductions of Luis Diaz and Curtis Jones. Jones set up Salah for the winning goal, a strike Slot described as "special" in his post-match assessment. "I was waiting for us to score the goal, but we didn't. That's why I made the substitutions. Both of them came on really strong," Slot continued. "Then you can say it's a bit of luck, but the goalkeeper cannot react. The second goal was a Mo Salah special. "It's not the first and not the last time he will score from that position." Salah's curled finish was his 48th match-winning goal in the Premier League, with only five players netting more in the competition’s history. The Egyptian also tallied up his 16th goal involvement (10 goals, six assists) against Brighton, only managing more in the top-flight against Manchester United (18). Salah's latest contribution sent Liverpool top of the pile after Arsenal and Manchester City's losses, though captain Van Dijk was not getting carried away with their league position. "It's too early to even make it important. We want to be on top of the league but we want to be there after the last match in May," Van Dijk told Sky Sports. "The results have been good so far this season but there is a long way to go. "It is still a work in progress. We stay humble and keep fighting."
La Liga give reasoning behind decision not to postpone MD12 fixture schedule

On Thursday, La Liga confirmed that this weekend’s matches in the Valencia region would not be played because of the devastation caused by Storm Dana. Five fixtures in total were postponed, with two (Valencia-Real Madrid and Villarreal-Rayo Vallecano) being from the top division. It means that there will only be eight matches played this weekend, although for some, their belief is that there should be none at all. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is one that agrees with this, and on Saturday, La Liga gave their explanations as to why the entire MD12 fixture card has not been moved to a later date. As per MD, it is not to do with the limited alternative dates in the calendar, but rather to do with La Liga not wanting to deviate from other large companies in Spain whose business has not stopped amid Storm Dana. This reasoning is bound to not sit right with many, although there is little that can be done now that La Liga have issued their stance.
Boss pushes Marcelo back to bench after Brazil legend refuses his pre-sub tactic

REAL MADRID and Brazil legend Marcelo was stopped from coming on by his OWN MANAGER after appearing to argue with the coach's tactics. The five-time Champions League winner, 36, left the Bernabeu in 2022 after 15 hugely successful years in the Spanish capital. He joined Olympiacos for one season, before returning to his home country last year when he signed for boyhood club Fluminense. Marcelo has played 68 games for the Brazilian side - who sit 12th in the top flight. But he was denied another appearance on Saturday after an incredible touchline spat with manager Mano Menezes. The left-back was stripped and ready to come on in the 90th minute with Fluminense holding onto a 2-1 lead over Gremio. Marcelo was preparing to enter the fray as part of a double substitution which also included the introduction of Marquinhos - the winger on loan from Arsenal. But as Menezes gave Marcelo instructions on the sideline, the ex-Real Madrid man seemed to disagree with what he was being told. This led to the manager becoming furious, before he pushed Marcelo and told him to sit down again. Marcelo walked to the bench and pulled his bib back on. And he ended up watching his team concede a stoppage-time equaliser as Fluminense drew 2-2 with Gremio. Reacting to Marcelo's altercation with Menezes, journalist Tancredi Palmeri said: "I have never seen anything similar in elite football." While one fan replied: "Respect to the coach for not backing down!" Another added: "This is so disrespectful." And a third said: "As it should be, he’s not bigger than the coach or the club."
Atletico breathe sigh of relief as key player’s injury scare is not serious
Atletico Madrid have had a tough few weeks, and a pick-me-up will be required against Las Palmas on Sunday. Their chances of returning to winning in La Liga aren’t as high as they’d like them to be, especially as the Gran Canaria-based side have won their last two league matches (three in all competitions). Their chances of returning to winning in La Liga aren’t as high as they’d like them to be, especially as the Gran Canaria-based side have won their last two league matches (three in all competitions). Diego Simeone will be demanding more of his side, and fortunately, he will have significant reinforcements at the Metropolitano. As per Diario AS, Clement Lenglet and Pablo Barrios are both available after minor injury problems, and both are expected to start against Las Palmas. The same can also be said for Jose Maria Gimenez, who suffered a scare during Friday’s session. He was back in training on Saturday, and barring any setbacks, he will also be in the starting line-up. It’s clear that Sunday’s fixture is must-win for Atletico Madrid. Having Lenglet, Gimenez and Barrios is very good news, and their chances of victory will increase if all three are able to start.
Why Real Madrid’s problems go beyond just Ancelotti after El Clasico defeat
Just as much as what you see and hear in every narrative, the absence of what is not there plays an equally large role in making it seductive, intriguing, or shocking. When Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal vacuumed the sound out of the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday night, punctuated solely by the shouts of a few Barcelona fans meant to be hidden in the corner, that silence and everything you feel with it is one that few other spectacles can replicate. On reflection, Carlo Ancelotti might have taken the moment to close his eyes and appreciate it. Since before the final whistle in El Clasico, he has faced a wall of sound, from keyboard to headline to radio station, all indignation and reproach. If you take one conclusion from this week’s coverage in Madrid, it should be that President Florentino Perez is fed up. The bespectacled Caesar has thumped the big red button, and the machines of pressure, from which Ancelotti had been as free from as any Real Madrid manager, can be heard between the lines. Ancelotti is not blameless, but to think Real Madrid would be rid of all their issues if Xabi Alonso were there instead, is a simplification that will create more problems than it would solve. The first thing to say is that despite being mugged off by Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi for most of the match, Ancelotti had it right. His plan was working in the first half. The unorthodox positioning of Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham created three clear chances in the first half for Real Madrid, while Barcelona threatened, but only really broke through once. Barcelona couldn’t find rhythm, nor launch their lethal counters effectively, with Raphinha’s runs starved of service. Even if Real Madrid struggled to spring the backdoor open often – they only need to catch them once, said Madridistas hungrily – it did happen thrice. Where Ancelotti was outfoxed, and where Real Madrid were left chasing their tail, was with the entrance of Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman changed the dynamics, and while Fermin Lopez functioned as second forward, introduced to empower Barcelona’s press, de Jong delivered domination – three against two with Pedri, Marc Casado against Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde. Failure to react in time cost Real Madrid not just a bloody nose, but pummeling that has left more lasting effects on egos. Criticism for Ancelotti is more than justified, and beyond the Clasico, it’s true that they’ve looked vulnerable, without necessarily bringing big enough weaponry to the fight to scare many teams into a more conservative approach. He himself has admitted that he is yet to work out the formula for magic. What is lacking from that criticism is solutions. Where would Ancelotti have turned to alter Real Madrid’s style, which pieces should he have introduced? Luka Modric and Arda Guler might have delayed and disguised their passes better to beat the offside line, but both would likely have been isolated by Barcelona without the ball, and setting either to the task of keeping Alejandro Balde quiet would have earned Ancelotti just as much derision. Outside of that, Brahim Diaz is just off the back of two months out. Dani Ceballos is equally familiar with the treatment table, and has just nine starts in the last two seasons. The ex-Real Betis midfielder, alongside Modric, is one of two players in the squad that have shown an ability to direct traffic in midfield, before addressing the physical and situational factors. Real Madrid’s strategy of not recruiting profiles but top players has served them well, and better than most other top clubs, but Ancelotti has been one of the reasons that has not hindered Los Blancos too much over the last three seasons. Losing Toni Kroos was the tipping point. What Modric and Kroos have provided so well for Real Madrid, amongst a generation of terrifying athletes, gifted forwards and lethal competitors, is referred to simply in Spain as ‘futbol’. Earlier this season Ancelotti was asked about his repeated statements that he is looking for a faster and more direct side, and his justification was quite simply that ‘we don’t have players for small spaces’, an unusually damning indictment of his own squad. While Brahim, Vinicius and Rodrygo Goes might start a bar fight over that statement, all of those players are in the final third, and the problem all season, and in the Clasico, is getting the ball to them. Tchouameni, Camavinga and Valverde are blessed with special quality, but none would be signed by another top team as their point guard. It’s not just Kroos either. As Real Madrid fans awaited their trademark comeback last week, or against Lille, or tried to hold out against Atletico Madrid, they lacked an unlikely hero. Nacho Fernandez was far from perfect, but he was a leader, and Dani Carvajal is gone through injury now too. Over half of Jude Bellingham’s goals in La Liga last season came with Joselu Mato on the pitch, and his presence to tie up backlines late on is being sorely missed. Given Mbappe’s best form for France has always demanded Olivier Giroud ahead of him, he too is probably frowning at the big 6’3 German-Spanish hole left by the former Alaves man. Even renowned fitness coach Antonio Pintus has caught some heat. His deliberate method of training Real Madrid to have two fitness peaks, one in November-December and one in March-April, has paid clear dividends. In six years across two spells, Los Blancos have collected four Champions Leagues, results clear of all competitors. In La Liga, it’s ‘just’ three, below expectation at Real Madrid, and a strategy that has clashed with domestic consistency. Last year, Real Madrid hit that second peak with a lead in La Liga, sustained by an Ancelotti decision. The move to use Bellingham as a ‘llegador’ or arriver, was a stroke of genius that covered for an unevenness in last season’s squad. It made Real Madrid much better than they were supposed to be, in a season which began with Barcelona as favourites to retain the title. Quietly, and away from prying ears, Ancelotti might be looking at Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, or Mikel Arteta and wondering why every other top manager gets at least two players for every role. This year he has been left without a number nine, controlling presence in midfield, or much in the way of a natural width. It doesn’t help when Flick is inventing multiple Sergio Busquets successors out of thin La Masia air. If anything, Ancelotti has managed too well for his own good. He lacks the leverage in the club offices. His flaws have been exposed this season, but Real Madrid know Ancelotti just as well he knows them. And they should have known that he would not hold them to account in the same way many other top coaches might, for better or worse. None of this will matter come the end of the season, or to Ancelotti’s job security, but let the record not be defined by what is not in it.
Damien Duff attempts to call Jose Mourinho after League of Ireland title success
Former Chelsea winger Damien Duff was left hanging by Jose Mourinho after attempting to call his former manager to celebrate Shelbourne's League of Ireland title.Duff - who won the Premier League twice with Chelsea during his playing career - went into the final day of the League of Ireland season with his side holding a two-point lead over Shamrock Rovers. Former Chelsea winger Damien Duff was left hanging by Jose Mourinho after attempting to call his former manager to celebrate Shelbourne's League of Ireland title. Duff - who won the Premier League twice with Chelsea during his playing career - went into the final day of the League of Ireland season with his side holding a two-point lead over Shamrock Rovers. With Shamrock Rovers winning on the final day and boasting a superior goal difference, Duff's win need a win away at fourth-placed Derry City to be sure of lifting the title. Duff's men scored in the 84th minute through former Manchester United youth player Harry Wood, with his effort proving enough to win Shelbourne's first league title for 18 years. The Shelbourne boss then vowed to give his players 'monkey' - €500 (£420) towards their celebrations - if Fenerbahce boss Mourinho did not answer when he attempted to call him in the dressing room. After Mourinho failed to pick up, Duff joked he would go 'double or quits on the next one', before the 45-year-old jokingly suggested his former Chelsea boss had responded. Duff later suggested that the mentality of his Shelbourne players was the closest he has experienced to Mourinho's Premier League title winning side at Chelsea in 2005. 'I died on the pitch for Jose, that's what I've always done,' Duff told the Irish Independent. 'Everyone hated Chelsea, everyone hates us, blah, blah, blah. Another chapter in the story. 'I told the lads beforehand that the last time I felt that mentality and feeling was with the Chelsea 2005 group. We'd sweat blood and tears for each other and I haven't tasted it since but I've tasted it for the last few years with these guys.' Duff revealed that Mourinho had played a role in the build-up to the season defining match. The legendary manager sent a private message for Duff to show to the squad, with his message shown to the players two hours before kick-off. 'Why Jose?' Because do I try and build, have we tried to build a siege mentality, us against the world like he did? Absolutely,' Duff said. 'It would be mad not to tap into him. So Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, there was posts on the Instagram page. Powerful lyrics, powerful words that would resonate and have a meaning to tie in for tonight. 'Then, in the team meeting, there was a private message from Jose speaking about what it takes to win a title as a team, as an individual. It blew the guys away. A video that was shown in the Everglades two hours before the game.' Mourinho was not the only legendary sporting figure to help out in Shelbourne's bid for the title. Duff also revealed rugby great Sir Ian McGeechan, the former Scotland and Lions boss, had also been used as motivation. Shelbourne ended the season with 63 points from their 36 matches. Shamrock finished second with 61, ahead of St Patrick's Athletic with 59. Duff has been in charge at Shelbourne since November 2021. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0A/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcmXAeAFVocAAISfsJau3A201.jpg After retiring from playing in December 2015, he started his coaching career at Shamrock, where he initially worked with the U15 side. He later worked as part of Ireland's backroom staff, starting with the U15s before becoming assistant manager to Stephen Kenny. Duff gained further coaching experience at Glasgow giants Celtic before eventually taking the No 1 job at Shelbourne. Prior to Friday's dramatic season finale, Shelbourne had not been champions of Ireland since 2006.
Bayer Leverkusen chief doubles down over Xabi Alonso exit rumours

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso remains on the radars of Real Madrid and Manchester City for 2025. The former Spanish international saw his stock rise at the back end of last season as he guided Leverkusen to a first-ever Bundesliga title. Following that success, an extension was agreed with the German giants, as Alonso opted against a return to Liverpool. However, rumours over him being offered another top European job have resurfaced, with interest from Manchester and Madrid. Pep Guardiola is out of contract at the end of the campaign with rumours of Carlo Ancelotti being under pressure in the Spanish capital. Ancelotti and Alonso are both under contract until June 2026 and Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes has claimed the latter is fully committed to his project in at the BayArena. “Xabi Alonso’s chances of staying until 2026 are 100% certain. He has a contract and shows no signs of going in another direction”, as per quotes from RTL, via Diario AS. Alonso has endured a mixed start to his Bundesliga title defence as they trail league leaders Bayern Munich by seven points after nine games played.
Arsenal fans rage at duo who can’t start together, both hooked in Newcastle loss

ARSENAL fans have been left raging at Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard following the devastating defeat to Newcastle. The Gunners limped to a 1-0 defeat at St James' Park in a horrific blow to their Premier League title hopes. Alexander Isak's solitary goal was enough to split the sides and left Mikel Arteta's outfit five points behind Manchester City. The Magpies star headed the hosts in front inside the opening 12 minutes, but Arsenal were unable to get themselves a goal. Supporters have pointed to the lack of contribution from attacking duo Martinelli and Trossard. Martinelli was in his usual position on the left wing but struggled up against Tino Livramento. The defender won every tackle, aerial dual and ground duel against the Brazilian. This massively impacted Martinelli's ability to pose a threat, as he did not provide a single accurate cross or shot on target before he was subbed. Trossard was just as ineffective for Arteta playing in the No10 role. The Belgian only touched the ball in the Newcastle box four times throughout his time on the pitch. The attacker was often forced to collect the ball from his own half before he could try and move forward. Many fans suggested that the duo aren't capable of co-existing on the same pitch. One said: "Trossard and Martinelli in the same team just doesn’t work, we are missing creative passing and it’s very obvious neither has that." A second wrote: "Can't watch Trossard and Martinelli together on the pitch." A third commented: "Trossard and Martinelli are two of our three best wingers at the club. They are absolutely soul-sucking to watch." A fourth said: "Sub Martinelli off and send Trossard on the wing." Another added: "Trossard needs to switch to Martinelli’s wing. Sub off that ram and bring Ben White in." After the game, Arteta insisted that he was "very frustrated" with the defeat. He said: "We deserved to lose today. I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn't defend the box well enough. Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball. "Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn't do that well enough. I am very frustrated. "We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn't play the game that we wanted. "We had two big chances - Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers."
AC Milan boss offers update on Rafael Leao to Barcelona rumours

Barcelona are reportedly ready to launch a transfer push for AC Milan star Rafael Leao in 2025. Links to the Portugal international have rocketed in recent weeks following speculation of Barcelona looking at Plan B options to Nico Williams. Earlier this week, it was reported Leao would consider leaving AC Milan as his relationship with head coach Paulo Fonseca has broken down significantly in recent weeks. This update gives Barcelona a small window of opportunity, and it appears it can now be opened further, if the Catalans have the financial power to make an offer. Fonseca was directly asked about the situation, as Leao was not included in his squad for tonight’s clash with Monza, fuelling rumours of a bust up between the pair. However, despite the growing focus, Fonseca deflected the question but did not fully deny rumours of an issue between them. “There is no conflict, it’s my choice. I don’t want to go into details, it’s a private matter”, as per quotes from Diario AS. Leao is under contract at the San Siro until 2028, and his transfer value is higher than Williams’ €58m release clause in Bilbao.
Kompany not focused on Champions League pressure after Union Berlin victory
Vincent Kompany said he is not focused on the pressures of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League after Bayern Munich's 3-0 win over Union Berlin.Bayern moved temporarily top of the Bundesliga standings thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman's third goal in as many league games. Vincent Kompany said he is not focused on the pressures of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League after Bayern Munich's 3-0 win over Union Berlin. Bayern moved temporarily top of the Bundesliga standings thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman's third goal in as many league games. Kompany's side have now scored 32 goals in their first nine games this season, taking their tally to 50 goals under the Belgian's tenure in 14 games in all competitions. But Bayern have failed to replicate that form in the Champions League, failing to win their last two games following an opening day mauling of Dinamo Zagreb. They find themselves in 23rd place in the new league format in the competition, and are at risk of not making the knockout stages for the first time since 2002-03. "Fact is that every Bayern game has pressure. But I am not focusing on pressure. Just on the next game," Kompany said. "This format is eight teams qualify and 20-odd play in playoffs. "For the top eight teams it is true (automatic qualification) but it is not about being in or out of the Champions League with this format." Bayern host Benfica on Wednesday, and will be looking to turn their European fortunes around on home soil. And Kompany believes the intensity shown in their latest Bundesliga triumph can be used as positive momentum ahead of their Champions League return. "I think the team was working hard in the first and second half, but I was happy with our performance in the second half because we did not concede momentum," Kompany said. "We did it really well. It was not an easy game, therefore it is a great result for us."
Barcelona could target Lille’s Lucas Chevalier in summer shakeup
According to a report from Sport, FC Barcelona have taken steps to find out more information about Lille OSC’s Lucas Chevalier (22) as they consider bringing in an elite goalkeeper this summer. According to a report from Sport, FC Barcelona have taken steps to find out more information about Lille OSC’s Lucas Chevalier (22) as they consider bringing in an elite goalkeeper this summer. The injury to Marc-André ter Stegen (32) and reported doubts surrounding the suitability of Iñaki Peña Sotorres (25) led the club to bring in Wojciech Szczęsny (34) as a stop-gap until the end of the season. However, there remain concerns over the long-term future of the role. Barcelona are reportedly not yet fully committed to buying a new goalkeeper and the club will have to consider their finances ahead of any attempt to bring in a talent whose price is only increasing with every excellent performance that he puts in during Lille’s Champions League foray. Diario Sport writes that Barcelona believe it will take more than €40 million to convince Lille to part with Chevalier. And it could turn out to be a lot more if a bidding war develops, with Paris Saint-Germain having long been linked with a move for the France U21 goalkeeper. GFFN | Nick Hartland
Nistelrooy admits he had 'mixed feelings' about being Man Utd's interim manager

Ruud van Nistelrooy said he enjoyed every second of his Manchester United managerial debut but admitted that he had 'mixed feelings' when he first learned he had landed the job. The former United striker was appointed as interim manager on Monday after fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag had been sacked. Two days later, Van Nistelrooy got off to a winning start by overseeing a 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. On Friday, United confirmed that they had found Ten Hag's long-term replacement and that Ruben Amorim would be joining from Sporting Lisbon on November 11. Van Nistelrooy will remain in charge until then and oversee another three home games - against Chelsea, PAOK Salonika and Leicester again. ManUtd.com published an interview with Van Nistelrooy on Saturday morning. It began with the 48-year-old describing his emotions surrounding the win over Leicester. He began: 'Yeah, if I speak about the game, the reception, the connection with the crowd, and how the players reacted and how the players played, it was a great night. 'I enjoyed every second of it. Special, proud moment. Obviously the days before leading up to that were with mixed feelings. 'It was hard to see the manager go: the one who got me into the club, you know, the one who was fighting also for this club and cared a lot about the club. 'So that was hard. But I have to say that, after that, the crowd lifted our spirits and it was a great night in the end.' Van Nistelrooy then praised his players for beating a 'good opponent' on what could have been a 'difficult' night. He added: 'I think the players reacted very well. They took a lot of responsibility, also looking at themselves and [saying]: "We need to improve and we need to do better". 'It's not only the manager's fault, so they acknowledge that, and that's obviously a big step in improving, and they enjoyed themselves on the pitch.' As well as getting a positive reception from the club's fans, Van Nistelrooy revealed that he also received messages of support from former United managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. 'Yes, I spoke shortly with Sir Alex,' he said. 'He wished me luck before the game. You know, Ole sent me a text to wish me luck, as [did] many former players that reached out and just sent me a text, [wishing] all the best. It was great to receive all these messages.'
